CHANGE IN CONDITIONS OF LATONIA DERBY LOU rTKLE Ky February 11 It is con ¬ fidently expected that the entries for the 15000 Added Latonia Derby which close on February 24 will be the largest in the history of that important stake There is a change in conditions this year which will appeal to the owners of threeyearolds The winner of the Kentucky Derby or any other stake of the value of 25000 will carry 126 pounds but nonwinners of a threeyearold race of that value are allowed five pounds Nonwinners of a threeyearold race worth 5000 are allowed eight pounds and maidens are allowed twelve pounds As the distance is one and a half miles there has been a tendency in the past for many of the ovners of threeyearolds to dodge this race rather than have their horses take up 12G pounds With the weight scale graduated as above it is believed that the entry list will be doubled and that the largest field in the history of the stake will go to the post postIn In former years the Clark Handicap which is as old as the Derby and one of the most popular of the Churchill Downs stake attractions was run on the Saturday suc ¬ ceeding the Derby General manager AVinns present plan is to run this stake on the opening day in addition to one of the 5000 added twoyearold stakes possibly the De ¬ butante The race at one mile for three yearolds will bring out many of the eligibles for the Derby and that will be a preliminary of exceptional interest The Clark Handicap has 10000 added one and oneeighths miles This is for threeyearolds and over while the older stake horses may dominate the field there will be a temptation for some of the threeyearold owners to get a good race into their charges in preparation for the Derby DerbySuperintendent Superintendent Tom Young is receiving many applications for stable room both at Churchill Downs and Douglas Park The Xew Orleans contingent will be the earliest on the field Mose Goldblatt will be one of the first to arrive He not only has a large string of his own but he has arranged to meet the first division of the Whitney horses which will be shipped from Tledbank by tiainer Rowe a little later in the season Mr Whitney will have at least six entries in the Derby and as he is one of the biggest nomi ¬ nators in all the twoyearold stakes at Churchill Downs and Latonia his list is Awaited with keen interest by turfmen and the racemoving public
