LOUISVILLE Ky February 11 There are two Derby candidates at Douglas Park that are attracting unususl attention Bud Fishers Cartoonist and Carl Weidemaiuis In Memoriam Both have wintered well and have grown into fine threeyearolds and with their last years records to judge from they should be given careful consideration for the Kentucky Derby for which both will be named namedIn In the matter of performance Cartoonist must be given consideration over Mr Weide manns colt He is by the dead sire Celt from Honey Bee by Hamburg He made his debut on April 15 at Havre de Grace running third to Enchantment An ambitious program was laid out for him in the East He ran second to Dust Flower on the open ¬ ing day at Saratoga in the Flash Stakes running five and a half furlongs in 1 06 and at the finish he was wearing the Milam filly down On August 5 he took up 115 pounds in the United States Hotel Stakes and ran third to Martingale over a heavy track He came right back in the Saratoga Special on August 12 but ran unplaced to Goshawk McKee and Bud Lerner On Au ¬ gust 19 he again ran unplaced in the Grand Union Stakes which was won by Zev over a heavy course There was not much rest for Cartoonist for his trainer sent him back on August 22 in the Adirondack Handicap where carrying 116 pounds he beat Bud Lerner Cherry Pie Sallys Alley and other good ones winning in a canter and running the threequarters in 1 12 12CARTOONIST CARTOONIST A STAYER STAYEROn On August 31 he was beaten in the Hope ¬ ful Next we find him at Churchill Downs on September 9 where he finished fourth to Enchantment Picketer and Donges This was one of his best races The jockey took him back at the halfmile post and he was forced wide in the stretch and but for in ¬ terference might have given the winner an argument Distance does not seem to worry Cartoonist as he was always coming at the finish finishIn In Memoriam the McGee Enchantress colt which George Land is training for Carl Weidemann has won many friends among Continued on twelfth pngc EARLY DERBY PROSPECTS Continued from first page the trainers at Douglas Park While as a twoyearold he did not quite meet the ex ¬ pectation of his owner or trainer he showed enough to encourage them in believing that he is of Derby caliber He won his maiden race late in June at Latonia and on Sep ¬ tember 3 he won a purse fiveeighths in 1 06 beating Skeezix and Bo McMillan on November 1 he won another purse three quarters in 1 12 beating a good band bandPerhaps Perhaps his best race was in the Queen City Handicap in which he ran third to Oui Oui and Prince K The mile was run in 140 and In Memoriam made all the pace only to weaken at the finish Donges Betty Beall Rialto and others finished behind him Mr Weidemann is among the younger turf iner in Kentucky He has been generous in 1 is purchase of thoroughbreds and is espe ¬ cially anxious to win the Kentucky Derby Uuder his instructions trainer Land is giv irg In Memoriam special preparation for tlat race raceBo Bo McMillan is still at New Orleans with the T J Pendergast stable He will get his early Derby training at the Crescent City but it is doubtful if he will face the starter until the Kentucky season opens The Bal ¬ lot Nettie Hastings colt was formerly owned by Max Hirsch and sold by him to Mr Pen ¬ dergast He has had a strenuous campaign winning five races out of twentyone starts He is coming to his threeyearold form none the worse for his long siege He now stands over sixteen hands high and has finished into a horse that fills the eye of ilie expert Bo McMillan won his maiden start at Ja ¬ maica in the spring running fiveeighths in 1 00 He also won his last start at La ¬ tonia on November 4 when he beat Dan E OSullivan Triumph Prince K and In Me ¬ moriam The best race of his career was run in the Sanford Memorial Stakes at Sara ¬ toga when he took up 118 pounds and wen over a heavy track trackJ J S Ward believes that he has the Derby winner in his barn at Lexington in Dongs a colt by Celt Bessie Melton This colt never ran a race in which he did not show speed and courage but all through the year he was followed by a bad luck jinx which never deserted him Whether he face the starter in Kentucky Canada or Maryland the imp of ill fortune pursued him J le won his maiden race at Churchill Downs in May beating Dream Maker and Prince 1C In the Breeders Futurity at Lexington liu inn sec ¬ ond to Betty Beall conceding her eight pounds but was given the race orj the claim of foul He was entitled to this Futurity because jockey Taylor impeded Donges by grabbing his bridle bridleIn In the Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes at Churchill Downs Donges ran third being beaten by a neck by Picketer whose stable companion Enchantment won Carrying 122 pounds Donges made all the pace and had he not run out in the stretch woul clearly have been as good as second His last race was in the first division of the Pimlico Fu ¬ turity This was one of the best and his class must be determined by this race be ¬ cause he carried 119 pounds and finished ahead of Little Celt Dunlin General Thatch ¬ er Cyclops and other good ones The mile was run in l39s and he made a game true finish and was right on top of the winner Blossom Time Donges can carry weight and go the route and many good judges be ¬ lieve that he will be the contender in the great race on May 19
