Twenty Years Ago Today I Chief Turf Events of Feb 12 1903 Racing at New Orleans Newport and Ingle side Jockey Fuller rode two winners at New Or leans today todayThe The stables of R R Curry E S Gardner and H N McTyeire arrived at Cumberland Park today The best of the Curry string are Louis Wagner and Kubelik Of the Gardner string Frappe and Vestry are said to be best In the McTyeire string are Charley Thompson and Carrie L both useful horses Bud Embry surprised the followers of form when he scored in the first race at New Or ¬ leans at the juicy odds of 40 to 1 The track was slow and lumpy and Bud Embry seemed to revel in the going running through the mud as though he enjoyed it Sir Kingston was the favorite in this race but fell back after leading for a half mile BuJman also rode two winners at Ingleside In the twoyearold race which was the second on the card he rode the firsttune starter To ¬ ledo to victory Toledo ran the best race ever run over the Ingleside track by a twoyearold it was a remarkable performance from a time standpoint All the other starters were also newcomers to racing and Military Man looks like a comer The New Orleans stewards who have had their hands full ever since the opening of the meeting may refer the case of jockey Bu ¬ chanan to the Western Jockey Club for final adjustment Buchanan was set down because his employer Sam Hildreth openly accused him of riding a horse contrary to orders Bu ¬ chanan is under contract to ride this year for M H Tichenor Company and is one of the bsst riders in the West Trainer Wishard has taken up the great horses of his string at Cumberland Park This is the first time they have had a brush or a saddle on them since the fall meeting at West Chester Those that were taken up for active training were Wyeth the Darby winner Sav able the Futurity winner High Chancellor Runnels South Trimble and Von Rousse Wishard will give these only moderate exer ¬ cise for the next twenty days before he com ¬ mences to train them The six horses are the cream of the Drake stable Royal in Fred Burlews string is considered by trainers the most prominent Gravescnd candidate for the big spring handicaps Bur lew is well satisfied with weight alloted Royal in the Brooklyn Brighton and Suburban Handicaps He will carry 111 pounds in the Brooklyn and Suburban and 110 pounds in the Brighton Whether he wins or not he will certainly not be beaten for good looks There is not a better looking horse in training this year it is said He did not fetch a dollar more than his value when Newton Bennington paid 7500 for him at the Haggin sale
