FINAL DAY AT DEVONSHIRE Consistent Catalan Wins the 0. Henry Memorial Handicap. Best Love Equals tlte Track Record loulIe for Jockey Llebgold Lady Heart a "Winner. WINDSOR, Ont., August 1C Cloudy weather greeted the large crowd that turned out to witness the closing uays racing at Devonshire today. The track was fast and a good program, with the feature race, at one and one-eighth miles, brought together N. L. Byers consistent Catalan, which has won his last three races, and Bonnie Omar, with the former the public choice. The race, called the O. Henry Memorial Handicap, resulted in an easy victory for Catalan, which, followed Chloris under restraint and when called on in the stretch drew away to win by a length from the Joaquin Stables Horologe, which came from far back and managed to gain a nose decision over Bonnie Omar for second place. Bonnie Omar ran a good race but was no match for the winner. Best Pal tried to follow Chloris but the effort told on him and he tired badly. Dr. OMara was allowed to drop back in the early stages but finished with a rush. Chloris after setting the early pace tired badly in the stretch and dropped back. Bonnie Omar was kicked at the post and pulled up lame. A slight shower fell before the fifth race. A good crowd was on hand and the public was successful in selecting the winners. J. E. Maddens Best Love, making her first start this season on the Canadian tracks, accounted for the fourth race rather easily from J. MeMillens Deputy. Best Love was rated well back of the fast pace set by Amor Patriae and Banner Bearer. She gradually cut down their early lead and came past them at the stretch turn and won an easy victory. Deputy, running in improved form over his last two starts, wals close up but never really threatened the winner. Ten Sixty closed a big gap from a slow beginning. The time, 1 :11, equals the track record, the second time it has been equaled at this meeting, Bigheart having accomplished it in his race of Thursday. The first race at six furlongs for Canadian-breds brought out a small but well balanced field the winner turning up in Mrs. H. L. Smiths Hearts of Oak mare Lady Heart which won in a driving finish over G. A. Atkinsons Salvo. Lady Heart set the pace all the way but was driving hard at the end to stall off Salvo. Caledon could not keep pace with the first two but was best of the others. Bona Fide, the favorite; had no excuses. Algonquin showed much early speed but soon quit. June Fly closed a big gap from a slow beginning. The second race at five and a half furlongs resulted in a lucky win for Erica which nosed out Director in a driving finish. The latter was pounds the best but lost his advantage when lie ran wide coming into the homestretch. He came again, however, and Just failed to get up. Polynesia ran a good race.- He got to the front in the stretch but could not withstand the challenge of Erica and Director. Odd Seth fell on the way from the Windsor track and cut his leg and as a result ran poorly. A field of six two-year-olds paraded to the post in the third race. The winner turned up in E. P. Summerficlds Campfire colt Night .Shade who stood a hard drive gamely and outstayed Traymore in a long stretch duel. : J. MeMillens Lena AVood was third. The winer completed a double for jockey Lieb-gold who had previously won with Erica. R. V. Haymakers gelding Yoshimi was an easy winner of tne sixth race, a claiming affair at one mile and seventy yards, under a good ride by Mergler. Yoshimi was Kept far out of it in the early stages and made her move at the half-mile post and under a good ride won going away. Ferguson tired after assuming what appeared to be a winning lead.
