SUN FLAG WINS TRAVERS Cochran Colt Victorious in a Day of Upsets Spinaway to Blue Warbler Swinging, Maid at Arms, Kitty Pat and Royalite Unplaced El Kantara Captures North American Steeplechase SARATOGA SPINGS, N. Y., August 1C Sun Flag, the three-year-old son of Sun Briar and Private Flag, which Gifford A. Cochran bought at the Kilmer sale for 5,000 a year ago last spring and which was not considered a good buy, romped home winner of the historic Travers Stakes this afternoon and won 4,575 for his owner. William Woodwards Aga Khan was second and IT. C. Fishers Mr. Mutt a close up third at the end of the one mile and a quarter, which was run in 2:04. Sun Flag was a surprise winner, but it was a day of surprises when Blue Warbler, Maibird and Lightship filled the money positions in . the Spinaway Stakes, while El Kantara and Houdhii both beat Autumn Bells in the North American Steeplechase. One of the largest and most representative gatherings ever assembled at the beautiful Saratoga course was out for the sport and, though many of the j winners came from unexpected quarters, the sport was excellent. Little time was lost at the barrier in the Travers Stakes and from a good start Maiben took the lead with Lucky Play, while Sun Flag was not far back. Lucky Play had the inside position, but on the first turn he ran out badly and continued to bear out until the backstrctch was reached. There Maiben finally straightened him cut and he was still sjuowing the .way to Sun Flag under restraint. andeoglTandh"ad ySuii"Flag iirffler a strong pulL , back of him and it was evident that the son of Sun Briar could take the lead when called on. The others were strung out back of the leaders. Swinging out of the backstretch Lucky Play was still showing the way, but he again ran out, and Sun Flag and the, others began to move up. Then as Lucky Play continued to bear out and sulk, Sun Flag passed him and took a lead that was to sec him safely home the Avinner. Through the stretch he continued to draw away until at the end he was half a dozen lengths before the others. It was on the turn into the stretch that Aga Khan moved up resolutely and he had Lucky Play headed when they were straightened out. Maiben had swung Lucky Play to the inner rail in the run for home, but he was through and continued to drop back at every stride. KLOXDYKE DISAPPOINTS. Spic and Span, the stablemate to Sun Flag loomed up seriously for an instant in the stretch run but Aga Khan was too good for him, then right at the end. Mr. Mutt carne with a rush that saw him a neck back of lur; AVoodwards colt in third place. --Bir The race run by Klondyke was one6ftheV disappointments of the day. There wasfeo. time that he was in any sense a contender: The rich Spinaway Stakes at six furlongs for two-year-old fillies, resulted in a Kentucky victory, when in an exciting finish Edward R. Bradleys Blue AVarbler was the winner over AV. R. Coes Maibird with AValter M. Jeffords Lightship a close third and in advance of Harry Payne AVhitneys Mother Goose. The race was worth ?7,775 to the winner and nine started. It was as fine a band of fillies as has raced together all season, but the result was surprising, not because of the victory of Blue Warbler, but that Maibird and Lightship should finish second and third while back of them were such good ones as Swinging, Royalite, Maid at Arms and Kitty Pat. There was a long delay at the post, as is frequently the case Avitli fillies but the start was good. Lightship was the one to show the way from the barrier and Blue AVarbler and Swinging were well up with the others following in close order and Kitty Pat briging up the rear. Maibird was well up with the leaders and she was showing more speed than has marked her previous efforts while Royalite and Maid at Arms were in close quarters and farther back. AUTUAIX BELLS TIRES. Lightship held her lead until rounding into the stretch and when the others began to move up she continued gamely. Maid at Arms had been forced to go wide at the head of the stretch to find racing room and she could not improve her position while both Swinging and Mother Goose were tiring. It was not until the final eighth that Blue AVarbler threatened seriously and under a long drive she gradually overhauled the others to win going away by half a length. Maibird just outstayed Lightship by a nose and Mother Goose was at the heels of the Jeffords filly with the others strung out. The North American Steeplechase over the short course, provided a great race when Joseph E. Davis subscription jumper El Kantara was an easy winner completing the course in 4 :12, which clipped two and four-fifths sec- Continucd on sixteenth page. SUN FLAGS TRAVERS Continued from first page. onds off the best previous time for the course. The race was worth ,100 to the winner. Five started and what made the race remarkable was the manner in which J. B. Smiths Au-tum BeUs and the winner raced together. Autumn Bells, in all his races, has shown that he is a horse with much speed, but El Kan-tara was good enough to match his speed and finally defeat him so effectually that the lightly weighted Houdini got up in time to beat him for second place. Cheyne took the lead with El Kantara at the rise of the barrier and he was well clear of the others at the first jump while they were racing along under restraint. At the water jump El Kantara slipped slightly and then Cheyne permitted him to run with the result that he jumped rapidly and made no mistakes for the rest of the journey. "When the backfield was reached on the first turn of the course Kleeger rushed Autumn Bells up alongside of El Kantara but the imported jumper would not give way and the pair took a few jumps well lapped. Then when Kleeger found that Autumn Bells could not outrun El Kantara he took his mount back and the Davis jumper drew away again. Shortly afterwards he made a second attempt, evidently with the idea that he would carry the leader so fast that he would make a mistake, but the faster he pushed El Kantara the better the foreigner jumped until it was Autumn Bells that was the sufferer. Two jumps from home the result was no longer in doubt for Autumn Bells was all through and El Kantara was still running .strongly and jumping well. At the end El Kantara was under restraint to win by a dozen lengths and Houdini beat the tired Autumn Bells three lengths for second place. J. AV. McClellands Banter was winner of the opening race a seven furlongs dash, over Russell McGills Skyscraper while Frederick Johnsons Dream Maker was a close up third. Banter, away well, had speed enough to go into an early lead where he was rated along by Shuttinger and there was no time that he was really threatened and won with speed in reserve. Scoop and Skyscraper followed the winner closest but at the head of the stretch Scoop dropped out of it. Right at Um end Dream Maker came with a rush on the outside and in anotlier stride he would have been second. The mile and a furlong race that was fifth on the card resulted in an easy vitcory for Charles Miles Kellerman when he led home AV. Durnans AVoodlake, while the Ascot Stables Sylvan Springs after being almost left at the post closed an immense gap to be third. AVoodlake set the early pace but Kellerman followed him closely and shortly after turning out of the backstretch the Miles plater took command and opening up a good lead never left the result in doubt. AVoodlake after being apparently well beaten came again and hung on well to save second place but it is probable Sylvan Springs was best. After his misfortune at the start he worked his way up steadily and saving ground on the stretch turn found room to squeeze through into third place. In this race Romany was unlucky in being carried wide on both the first and second turn by Olynthus, a former stablemate, which now races for Mrs. J. A. Coburn. idiosyncrasy, from the Oak Ridge Stable, proved to be best of the maiden two-year-old fillies in the five and a half furlongs race I at the end of the program. By a determined rush in the stretch she led home P. T. Chinns Fair Alsion and AAralter M. Jeffords Florence Nightingale. It was Fair ATision and Florence Nightingale that set the early pace and j.hey raced each other into defeat, while Lavergne Fatcr waited back of them and made his winning move in the final eighth. In this race Killashandra was widely touted and shewed speed, but was securely pocketed in the stretch run when she seemed to have a winning chance.
