At Washington Park One Best Bet CHAFF In the Third Race. i 1 l 1 , , ; , Today is "William Hale Thompson Day at "Washington Park and the main race of the day is named in honor of Chicagos mayor. This is a handicap, to be run over the mile distance and a fine field has been named. Smiling Gus is to pack top weight in the race, 115 pounds. Next in order comes Samaron, coupled with Smiling Gus as the C. E. Durnell entry, and asked to shoulder 112 pounds, the same impost that David L. will carry. Flagship, with 110 and Nat Evens, with 109 come next in order. The Forty-second Ward Republicans Purse, over the mile and an eighth distance and to be decided as the final race on the card is possibly the next best race in the point of class of starters. Some of the better grade of selling platers are to hook up in this tilt. The remaining races are all of the claiming variety, with but two at the sprinting distances. RHUBARB JOE ADAMS EDNA SWEEP. Two-year-old maidens are to make the issue in the first number of the day and we are selecting RHUBARB to prove best He raced well in his last start and would need to improve but a little over that effort to win here. JOE ADAMS failed badly in his race on Monday and can do much better. He should be good enough to land the place money in this company. EDNA SWEEP, a recent arrival from Omaha, is possibly the best of the others and should not have much trouble in taking down the short end of the purse. LADY RAGLAN THE ROLL CALL HALU. If LADY RAGLAN races to her recent workouts, she should be the one to register in the second offering, a test of a mile. She has been showing plenty of speed in her trials and, with her light, impost today, stands a good chance of collecting the major portion of the coin. THE ROLL CALL is about due for an improved showing and this may be the spot. He has gone back considerably of late, but should be able to show to advantage in this field. HALU is an uncertain proposition, but a race to his best form should get him some part of the purse. ESCARRA rates a good chance on his winning trip Tuesday. CHAFF DIMPLE DUNKIE QUEEN BESSIE. CHAFF figures much the best in the third race, over the three-quarters distance. She has been showing improvement with each start of late and, against this cheaper company, needs to improve but slightly over her previous starts to get home in front-DIMPLE DUNKIE is to carry 117 pounds, else she would have to be given more consideration. She has never carried that much before to victory, but she is easily second best and should land closest to the winner at the finish. QUEEN BESSIE, on best races, gets the call for third. THE HOVEL Is a recent arrival from Fairmount Park, where she was more or less consistent in landing in the money, though failing to win, and she holds an outside chance in this number. MAGIC LIGHT SPELLBINDER-FOOLSCAP. The mile and three-sixteenths distance of the fourth race appears to be a likely spot for MAGIC LIGHT to register another win. He would prove best in his first time out at this course and has been doing fairly well since then. Taking a line through his last start, he is about ready for a winning effort. SPELLBINDER does not appear to have a ghost of a chance on recent races, but he is said to be working well and ready for the issue and he may go well enough today to take down the place money. FOOLSCAP is possibly best of the others and he should be able to land some part of the coin. DOROTHY ADAMS prefers muddy going. GUERDON SAMARON NAT EVENS. In the "William Hale Thompson Handicap we are picking the lightly-weighted GUERDON to prove a repeater. He put up a mighty good performance to win his race last Saturday against much the same company and, with the prevailing weights today, stands an excellent chance of adding this number to his credit. SAMARON has copped his last three races and is bound to be a dangerous contender, but we think the difference in weights will bring him back somewhat NAT EVENS has been racing well of late and gets the call for third place. SMILING GUS is far from his best form. DAVID L. may have to be feared. CHINK RED HARVEY LADY VON. In his last race, CHINK performed in much better fashion than in a previous start and, taking a line through that effort, is possibly ready for a winning trip today. He usually likes this track, but, to date, has been unable to land a purse. He carries but ninety-nine pounds in this number and, if he ever Is going to win at this meeting, should do it here. RED HARVEY turned in a good race his first time out after a long rest and, figuring that he will improve over that effort, is a good betting proposition for the place end of the purse. A race to her best form should find LADY VON holding the others safe for third money. ERLA LEE IL BURNT MOSES. The three-time winner ERLA LEE II. seems to be unbeatable of late and there is no good reason why she should not add the final number to her credit. She likes the distance of todays test, a mile and an eighth, and her usual effort should find her in front again at the finish. On best races, BURNT rates as best for second place. MOSES would prove a dangerous one if he raced in the style which marked his last winning effort. SCAMPAWAY may prove a keen contender too. STARBRIGHT is packing too much weight for him.
