BUYS DURNELL S HORSES LOUISVILLE. Ky„ May 9.— Griffin Wat-kins of Alton. 111., is the new owner of the horses Irish Pal, Smiling Gus and Helene M., formerly the property of C. E. Durnell. The transfer of the trio was done privately, first knowledge of the change in owners having been obtained through the registration with the racing secretary here. Irish Pal, a son of Prince Pal, was one of the most successful of the western two-year-olds last year and has trained well this season. He is a candidate for the Kentucky Derby. Louis Tauber is training the horses. This afternoon Durnell confirmed the sale of the three horses, but refused to divulge the amount involved in the deal, regarded as one of the largest of the spring Season. Durnell said that the disposal of the trio leaves him without a horse and carries to completion his decision to retire as an owner and to devote his undivided time to the management and training of the Three Ds Stable of E. P. Waggoner.
