CHESTER, England, May 9.— The Chester ■ Cup renewal here today resulted in a big surprise, when the Seagreen colors of Sir Hedworth Meux, admiral of the British fleet, were carried to victory in a driving finish by St. Marys Kirk. The five-year-old chestnut was in under the feather impost of 98 pounds and was ridden by W. Alford. S. Woottons Dakota, carrying 119 pounds and piloted by J. Marshall, was second, while A. P. Cox Gioconda, under 106 pounds and jockey K. Robertson, beat W. H. Thorpes Knud for third. There were seventeen starters. The two miles and a quarter contest was run on hard going with an average crowd in attendance. The favorite, Bamboul, was never in the running. St. Marys Kirk was held at 25 to 1. Dakota at 15 to 1, and Gioconda at 12 to 1. St. Marys Kirk won by a length and a half. Dakota outfinished Gio- conda by three lengths. St. Marys Kirk is of obscure breeding. He is by Sir Douglas— Gay Goshawk. He was reared in the Glascow Stud, within ten miles of London. His sire was sold cheaply and was exported to Roumania.
