Churchman. Apprentice Tommy Root is expected to return from New Orleans, where he was called by the illness of his sister. The latter successfully underwent an operation Tuesday. R. J. Nash and P. A. Nash, part owners of the Valley Lake Stable, and prominent in business circles in Chicago, returned to the latter city tonight. They will return for the Derby. The four-year-old. Royal Rally, owned by Otto TorreH. has been put into training by H. Roseacher. R. C. Frakes has taken over to train for Samuel H. Stone, local sportsman, the horses Cinestra, Easter Shadow, Nellie Lyons and Jack Savage. The latter three are two-year-olds. Jake Lowenstein. acting for Morris Vehon of Chicago, has acquired, from P. T. Chinn, the two-year-old Golden Glint, a gelding by Flittergold — Seemly. The transaction was private. Edward Kaiser is training the six horses of R. O. and B. O. Hickman of this city which were formerly handled by Dan Lehan. Mrs. J. D. Hertz, owner of Rcigh Count, Anita Peabody ami other star racers, accom-" panied by Mr. Hertz. Stuyvesant Peabody, owner of Martie Flynn. also a Derby hopeful, and other friends are expected here from Chicago on Friday. The entire party will remain until after the Derby. J. Hubert was licensed as an apprentice and J. McQuade authorized as agent for the Valley Lake Stable. C. E. Durnell today closed for the contract on jockey J. R. Kelly, who has been riding at Tulsa, Okla.. and that rider is expected to join the Three Ds Stable here tomorrow. Durnell acted for the mentioned establishment. Jockey Lee Hardy, under contract to the same stable and who suffered a fracture of a small bone in his right leg when thrown two weeks ago. is improving rapidly and hopes to be able to resume riding in about a month.
