May 9.— With about a seore of Derby eligibles intended for racing during the afternoon, the decided falling off in training activity of Derby candidates at Churchill Downs this morning came as no surprise. For the most part eligibles seen in morning gallops were of the lower flights and none exhibited anything above the ordinary. The track was in good condition, although it could have been a trifle drier when the training period opened. A warm sun soon disposed of the dampness that seeped through the soil during the night and a fast course was available soon after the training began. Round Trip, from the Coldstream Farm Stable, was sent a mile in 1 :13%. He responded so well that his trial won rank as one of the best of the morning. He went the quarter in :21. half mile in :4S% and three-quarters in 1 :15. He was under restraint throughout. A. A. Kaisers Bonivan. the son of Boniface, which accounted for the recent Camden handicap at Lexington, was sent a mile in the same time. He raced in hand throughout and, in doing the opening quarter in :23%, exhibited slightly more early speed than Round Trip. Other fractional time for Bonivan was the same as Round Trip. Sea Rip. owned by Mrs. John D. Hertz, who has the Derby favorite Reigh Count, was another one that galloped a mile. He was timed in 1 :44%, the fractional time being :25%, :52% and 1:18. Col. Bob was sent five-eighths. He worked in :21%, :36%, :49 and 1 :02. Doctor Fred went a half mile in :49% : Reproduce, three-quarters in 1 :19% ; Longridge, the same distance in like time, and Pen-tliorn. three-quarters in 1:16%. W. E. Hupps Reveries Gal, winner of the Ashland Oaks and unbeaten in her four starts in two years, was given an easy three-quarters in 1 :20%. Elizabeth and Sandrine, also Oaks candidates, went the same distance each in 1:19% and 1 :19, respectively. Reveries Gal and Sandrine are eligible for the Derby. Jock, from the K. B. McLean stable, figured in what was regarded as the best trial of the morning over a distance of ground when he went one mile and a quarter in 2 :09%, easily. The trial was his final stiff preparation for Saturdays renewal of the Clark Handicap. He went in :25, :49, 1:144,3 and 1 :41%.
