PITCHFORK PURSE WINNER Smitha Representative Gets Uj in Stirring Drive at Columbus to Defeat Lafe M. COLUMBUS. Ohio, May 9— Although the program was devoid of any special feature, large and evenly matched fields paraded in all of the seven races at Beulah Park this afternoon. Ideal conditions prevailed and the sport was witnessed by another capacity crowd. Several of the winners were returned by comfortable margins, but the racing was interesting. One of the best finishes of the day came in the third race, in which Al Smithas Pitchfork gradually wore down Lafe M., the pacemaker, in the stretch and outgamed him in the final drive. Lafe M. acted badly while at the post, which did not improve his chances any. Coral Reef was best of the others. Making his first start since he was cut down at Churchill Downs two years ago, Winter Street was made the medium for a heavy plunge in the curtain raiser. As the start came, the Underfire gelding quickly took command and never left the result in doubt after the first quarter. Roma held Hughes Graham safe for second place all the way After being hustled to the front in the early stages of the second race, Play Tag retained a comfortable lead over his opponents all during the stretch run. Uncle Abe, after a keen stretch drive, headed George Kuffan for second place in the last few yards. Lemon Seth made every pole a winning one in the fourth and scored with something to spare. The real contest developed for second place, in which War Boy, in a hard drive, outgamed Midday. Never far from the pace, Florida Castle took command, after completing the first three-quarters of the sixth race, and drew away in the stretch as if much the best. Phi Delta, tiring rapidly, barely lasted to save second from Archaist, which was a victim of bad racing luck. Finding an opening next the inner rail, when Stardale carried Fleur-de-Lis a trifle wide when entering the stretch, enabled Foeman to come through to a handy victory during the last sixteenth of the closing dash. There will be eight races each day for the remainder of this meeting, so great is the number of horses here unable to get an opportunity to run.
