GENIES IMPRESSIVE RACE • Belmont Stakes Candidate Accounts for Rock Sand Handicap. ♦ Works Mile and a Quarter in 2:07, After Winning Belmont Parks Feature Rare. » NEW YORK, N. Y., May 29.— Genie, the Gifford A. Cochran candidate for the Belmont Stakes, was winner of the one mile and an eighth Rock Sand Handicap at Belmont Park today, and after the finish he worked out the one mile and a quarter in 2 :07. It was a decidedly impressive move and one that gives the Man o War colt a new importance. The Rock Sand Handicap attracted a good field, and it was Dangerous, from the Rose-dale Stable, that raced to second place, with A. C. Schwartz Kentucky II. beating Brown Flash handily for the short end of the prize. Kentucky II., which is entered in the Suburban Handicap, to be run Saturday, was also worked out the one mile and a quarter, finishing the route in 2:07% handily. Conditions were ideal for the sport, and the track surface had improved greatly, though it was still slow from the recent l ins. The crowd was a big one, and the day furnished many thrills. The start in the Rock Sand Handicap was a good one, and Kelsay at once went out to force the pace with Genie. Priscilla Carter raced with him in the early stages, while Dangerous, showing more early speed than is usual for him, was third, while both Kummer, on Kentucky II., and McAtee, on Brown Flash, were rating along back of the leaders. Priscilla Carter did not last long and, as she dropped back beaten, Dangerous, saving ground on the inside, moved into second place, but Kentucky II. was still racing well and under a slight restraint. Brown Flash was being hustled along by McAtee, but he did not respond to the call and it was apparent at the top of the stretch that he was beaten. An eighth out both Dangerous and Kentucky II. were being hard ridden in a vain effort to catch the Cochran colt, but Genie held nobly to his lead and was still two lengths clear and going well at the end. Dangerous had just beaten Kentucky II. by a head, while Brown Flash was well beaten four lengths farther back. The Harlem Claiming Stakes, over the mile route, was the best race of the day so far as reward «was concerned when it was worth ,750 to the winner. It halted the winning streak of EL M. Byers Social Mug, which had rolled up five victories in a row, when he was led home by both Gormond, from the Rosedale Stable, and II. W. Maxwells Con li lined on twenty -fourth page. GENIES IMPRESSIVE RACE Continued from first page. Blabber. The only other starter was Clarence Buxtons filly Paragraph. When the stretch was reached Paragraph, the pacemaker from the start, was showing signs of tiring and there Craigmyle saved considerable ground on the inside, while Rummer went to the outside of Paragraph, losing ground. His move gave Blabber an advantage that saw him in front for an instant in the stretch, but by that time Gormond was coming along with his delayed rush and it was a hard fight right to the end, where Gormond was winner by half a length. Social Mug tired in the drive and he was a length and a half further back and a length before Paragraph. There was a thrilling finish came out of the second race when, after Lace, from the Mendham Stable, was winner, the next three finished closely lapped. The place was awarded to J. P. Smiths Sun Forward over Dr. T. M. Cassidys Indian Scout and Joseph E. Wideners Fair Ball, though to many it appeared that Indian Scout had finished second. But the finish was not the only thrill of the race. While at the post Mordicus. the imported sprinter that races for R. B. Strassburger, attempted to savage Jefferson Livingstons Junetta. When he snatched at the filly with his teeth he missed her, but grabbed the saddle cloth and jerked it from under the saddle, unseating Goodwin. The filly then ran off and almost circled the track before she was caught by red coat Murray.
