USY I SCENES AT H0MEW00D Large Force of Workmen Employed Day and Night Putting Finishing Touches to Improvements at Washington Park— About 400 Horses on Grounds « * — * The next three days will show at Washington i Park just what a large force of workmen, r employed day and night, can do to get t the immense rebuilt plant in readiness for t the opening. There is much to be done in t the way of adding the finishing touches, and r mechanics will be busy for some time yet, I but a great deal has been accomplished in t the last week or two and a genuine surprise i is in store for the thousands of Chicagoans who have the picture of the old plant in i mind. Scores of men were engaged Thursday in 1 leveling the parking spaces, which are ample i and very accessible on either side of the l grandstand, and that part of the grounds * which is not covered with the red brick pavement which is one of the most welcome improvements. j Washington Park is a ve:y i inviting objective to motorists and it also will 1 be a much more attractive place this year with those who travel by rail, for, beginning Monday, 1 the Illinois Central electrified special track trains will run direct from Randolph street to the main entrance of the I track. The spurs and train sheds are practically complete. Horses are arriving at Washington Park « at the rate of seventy a day. There were ; approximately 400 horses on the ground Thursday night and a large number of arrivals J are expected Saturday and Sunday. • Several recent arrivals have also been reported 1 at Lincoln Fields. One of the largest strings among the most recent arrivals is that of Stuyvesant Peabody, which now numbers eighteen horses. He has three nominated for the Washington Park Handicap and his Martie Flynn is expected to be a strong contender in this ,000 race on opening day. George Brooks came in with ten of the E. Cebrian horses which . have been racing in Kentucky. George May-berry brought in more than a dozen. Several important eastern bands were expected Friday. A. G. Blakeley is bringing a representative number of W. S. Kilmers horses. W. R. Coe, whose stable is almost certain to be one of the largest winners of the year, will have a few at this track and so will G. D. Widener. It is said that Earl Sande will be here in a day or two with Hermitage and several others which have won races for him recently. J. F. Schorr, trainer of the McLean horses, is expected in Sunday from Churchill Downs. His two handicap stars, Toro and Jock, are eligible for the Grainger Memorial there Saturday. They have no engagements here until the running of the Francis S. Peabody Memorial Handicap, but trainer Schorr has several other nominations in earlier stakes at Washington Park. He is expected to start the colt Silverdale in both the Washington Park Handicap and the American Derby and he has several nominations in the Thomas Curran Memorial, including the good colt Hades. Among todays arrivals will be M. and J. Lowenstein, Bob Rogers, J. W. Marsh, Jess Spencer and Bryant Ott, who has the Tom Taggart horses. Mrs. E. Denemarks string is looked for Sunday. She has Blackwood and Lee Cooper nominated for the Washington Park Handicap and Blackwood is a probable starter. B. B. Williams will be another Sunday arrival.
