BOSELEY COLORS IN FRONT * Billycock Accounts for Gateside Plate at Woodbine Park. • Contemplate Achieves Easy Triumph In Falmouth Plate — Stephanus Tires Badly After Setting Early Pace. ♦ TORONTO. Ont., May 23.— The Gateside Plate, a race over one mile, brought out the best field that went to the post this afternoon at Woodbine and J. Boseley, Jr., furnished the winner in Billycock. There were five starters and a splendid contest resulted. Throughout the running t ere was a lot of contention and the finish found all but Harvard fighting it out and they finished in a close bunch. Lieutenant II. was the one to set the pace. Beginning in front. Lieutenant II. outran his opponents and in the run down the back stretch opened up a lead of a length and a half, which he increased to two lengths on the far turn. Turning for home, Slate brought Billycock through next to the inner rail and, disposing of Lieutenant II., he hung on with determination when it came to the final drive. At the end he was half a length in front of Vellas, who in turn beat Rockslide by a neck for second place. The latter was a head in front of the tiring Lieutenant II. Brunner put up a poor exhibition on Rock-slide, messing him about and going wide for the entire journey. The Falmouth Plate brought a well-matched field of sprinters to the post. There were nine starters and Stephanus was the choice. There was a bit of delay at the barrier, and when the start finally came, Stephanus began with the leaders and was soon out m front setting a rapid pace. Lady Marie was right in back of him and the pair raced each other into submission. Contemplate, which had been following the pacemakers, charged on them entering the stretch and in the final eighth took the lead to win at the end by three-quarters of a length from Campanini. The winner was ridden by J. Brunner and his riding of Contemplate was in direct contrast to his ride on Rockslide. The faint-hearted Stephanus faded away in the stretch to finish seventh. SALMONS COLORS TO FORE. Pious, from the W. J. Salmon stable, was an easy winner in the first race when he finished with a lead of four lengths over Pandorous. Sidney W., breaking fast, made the early pace, but, rounding the far turn, was passed by Washington Carrie. At the top of the stretcn Schaefer brought Pious up from behind and, going to the eighth pole, moved into the lead. Once in front, Pious remained there and in the last sixteenth sue kept increasing her advantage. Washington Carrie tired badly at the end to be beaten a length and a half for the place. Oddins rider was evidently not interested in the running, for he began pulling up directly after the start until he was last of the fied. For the remainder of the trip he was a trailer. The Eastland Farm Stable furnished the winner of another steeplechase when Vo-calian won the Thick Thorn Purse this afternoon. The conditions of this race called for a journey of two miles and a quarter and over eighteen jumps. Vocalian went to the post a 3 to 5 choice, the shortest priced favorite in any steeplechase run at the meeting. Ridden by S. Veitch and following back of the pace until the last turn of the field, Vocalian took command when ready. In the last quarter Vocalian began to quit and at the end Veitch was forced to go to a drive to stall off Primed. Both were under punishment and a scant half length separated the pair as they flashed past the judges. Facet was third, ten lengths back. At the twelfth jump Fathailah fell and Beverwyck, which was in behind, tumbled over him. Both riders and horses escaped serious injury. W. J. Salmon furnished the winner of the other two-year-old race when Flashing beat Federal Reserve by a head in the running of the Terror Plate. This was a race of five-eighths and was scheduled as the third race. Federal Reserve started out like a winner, dashing to the front when the start came and drawing away into a lead of a length and a half in the run down the back stretch. On the far turn Flashing moved up and joined the pacemaker and the race resolved itself into a stretch duel. Flashing responded to punishment with rare courage and, wearing down Federal Reserve, got up in the last few strides. Cliftons Maid was a tiring third, beaten a length and a half for second place. When it came to the finish Schaefer put it all over J. Brunner and it was his riding as much as the fillys courage that was responsible for victory.
