NAISHAPUR THE FAVORITE • Rules Overwhelming Choice for the Fairmount Derby. ♦ Clyde Tan Dusen Definitely Oat of Race-List of Prospective Starters and Riders. • COLLINSVILLE, 111.. May 28.— Chafee Earls Naishapur is expected to be an easy winner of the Fairmount Derby if the betting barometer is a correct index. The colt has been installed an overwhelming favorite in the future books operated in this section. Tom Kearney, who presides over the largest of the brokerage institutions that cater to those with a liking for a flyer on a play or pay basis, is quoting the California owned colt at evens. The heavy play about him in the last forty-eight hours has caused the price to go tumbling. The present quotations are not appealing in view of the fact that it entails forfeiture of the money wagered should the colt through some unforeseen contingency fail to go to the post. It is practically certain that Clyde Van Dusen will not be among the starters. His namesake trainer advised general manager C. Bruce Head to that effect His absence from the race is disappointing for there is a great desire among St. Louis racing devotees to get a glimpse of this years Kentucky Derby winner. Trainer Van Dusen gave as his reason for the failure of the colt to come here that the racer had just engaged in a trying test with Toro, regarded as the champion in the older division, and that a let up at this time was necessary to enable him to recover from his hard race. It is also the intention of trainer Van Dusen to start his charge in the American Derby, which has its decision at Washington Park June 15, when he will renew his battle with Blue Larkspur and other cracks that he vanquished in the Kentucky fixture. Present indications are that the Fairmount Derby field will not . have more than ten starters, if that many. So far there has been expression from eight owners or trainers that they intend sending their charges to the post. This should bring about a true run race, free of any possible interference to any of the starters.
