CHAFFEE EARL A COLONEL Governor Sampson of Kentucky Honors Californian — Visits Kentucky Breeding Farms. LEXINGTON, Ky., May 28.— Col. Chaffee Earl and wife, Mrs. Earls mother, trainer John B. McKee and Messrs. George Bab-coc": of Louisville and A. M. Kinstler of Los Angeles were guests of Col. W. S. Dudley at dinner here Sunday night and on a motor party through the Blue Grass region Monday to see several of the thoroughbred breeding establishments and some of the noted horses thereon. Colonel Earl, only 21, the head of the Earl Petroleum Company of California, owner of Naishapur, winner of the Tijuana Derby, second in the Kentucky Derby and Coffroth Handicap and to start next Saturday in the Fairmount Derby, also owner of the two-year-old Jim Dandy, which is to start in the Bashford Manor Stakes at Louisville this week, is very proud of the commission Governor Sampson gave him yesterday afternoon at Frankfort to be a colonel on his staff. He said today that he had heard much of the great breeding establishments in Kentucky, but that he was astonished to find them so numerous and so complete and that he now well understands why Kentuckians produce such wonderful horses. He said his impression is that Kentucky horses are only superseded by Kentuckys hospitality to the visitors within her domain. ♦
