DIAYOLO TRIUMPHANT ♦ Turns Tables On Light Carbine in Brookdale Handicap. • Rancocas Grattan Beats H. P. I Whitneys Prometheus in Great American Stakes. ♦ NEW YORK. N. Y., June 22— Diavolo. the ■turdy son of Whisk Broom II. — Vexatious. which races for the Wneatley Stable, turned the tables on I. B. Humphreys Light Car-Line in the running of the Brookdale Handicap at Aqueduct today. Under ten pounds less weight. Light Carbine had beaten the Dixie Handicap winner in the Brooklyn Handicap, but today Diavolo wore the son of Galloper Light down to win going away by a length. The prize had a net value of ,250 to the winner, and it was Robert L. Gerrys Ironsides that took thirj from Louis H. Howes Sepoy. A companion feature and a race of greater value was the Great American Stakes, for juvenile*, that saw Grattan. from the Rancocas Stable winner ov?r H. P. Whitneys Prometheus by a narrow margin. The setting for these two features was not worthy of New York sport with three of them under claiming conditions and two of the three for maidens. But, of course, there was an immense crowd out, with the usual confusion for those unfortunate enough to travel to the course by train. EXCELLENT START. There was no time lost at the post at the start for the Brookdale Handicap and seven that raced left in the same stride, though, as was expected, Diavolo was so slow to be under way that he was last in the early stages. McAtee went out to force the pace with Ironsides, and Light Carbine was closely lapped on him, with Sepoy also racing close up. Black Panther, like Diavolo, had scant early speed, but the son of Whisk Broom II. developed speed in the running, while the Salmon hope was soon last and doomed to remain there. Ironsides was still nursing him cleverly. Light Carbine hung to him, and an eighth out he had the Man o War colt beaten, but, in the meantime, Maiben had circled around with Diavolo and he was charging along on the outside with his winning rush. Light Carbine did not give up without a game struggle, but a few strides from home he was past to cross the line a length to the good. Ironsides had tired badly at the end to be four lengths further back, bui he was three lengths before Sepoy. Grattan ran a good race for the Rancocas Stable when he won the Great American Stakes, which added another 5,560 to his score. He led home II. P. Whitneys Prometheus and Sarazen II., from Mrs. Graham Fair Vanderbilts stable, beat Frumper. another starter, for third, with William J. Zeig-lers Sumair a close fifth. Sumair had some advantage at the stait when Mack Garner rushed him away from the inside position and he was showing he way until well inside the final eighth. It was there that Prometheus bore over slightly and In doing so crowded Sarazen II. slightly and in turn the Vanderbilt colt went over on Sumair, causing Garner to take up slightly, but the son of Kwang-Su seemed to be beaten at the time. SPIRITED FINISH. Grattan had been running straight and true and while Prometheus gave him an argument right to the end, he was over the line winner by a head. The son of Broomstick had saved second place from Sarazen II. by two lengths and Frumper was another three lengths further back. The second race of the afternoon was a four and a half furlongs dash, for juvenile fillies, which proved easy for George Lofts good On Watch filly Mabla and it marked up her fifth consecutive success. Beginning well, Mabla quickly went into a safe lead and there was no part of the running that she was seriously threatened. T. J. Beauchamps Betty Beau raced forwardly next to the inside rail all the way to save second place and It was John E. Maddens Stage Wait that was third, another that had always a forward position in the running. B. G. Guths Venezuela was much the best of the maidens that started in the fifth race, hut he was beaten home by J. F. Adams Peggs Pride, one that bad beaten the barrier, while he was sent from a position outside the stalls and lengths back of the others. Brice made good use of his advantage with Peggs Pride at the start when he sent him along smartly to save ground all the way. He raced Margaret Cal into submission, while Venezuela was forced to race on the outside Continued on twentieth pace. D1AV0L0 TRIUMPHANT Continued from first page. and. after closing an immense Rap, he also caught Margaret Cal in the final sixteenth to put her away, but he was still two lengths back of Feggs Pride. The Rosedale Stables old Dangerous was winner of the mile and five-sixteenths rare for platers at the end of program. The old fellow had something in class on the others and he was cleverly rated along in front by Jimmy FJurke for the entire distance. At the end Euphrates finished with his usual courage and he was only beaten a half length, while La Paloma, after racing well to the final sixteenth, tired to lose that part of the purse by half a length to Bigot,
