SURPRISING OUTCOME ■ McEvely Takes Measure of Odds- On Favorite Tannery. • Earns ,570 Through Victory in Statler Hotel Stakes at Fairmount Park Course. • COLLINSVILLE, 111., June 22— McEvely, the sturdy son of McGee and Conclusion, which races for C. W. Moore, distinguished himself at Fairmount Park this afternoon by taking first honors in the ,000 added Jefferson Hotel Stakes, over five and a half furlongs, for two-year-old colts and geldings exclusively. McEvely was ridden to his sparkling victory by jockey A. Pendergrass and, by virtue of his success, ,670 to the credit of his owner, which was the net value of the purse. McEvely prevailed at long odds, due to the heavy plunge on the favorite, E. F. Prichards colt Tannery. The latter was always much the most in demand, ruling a strong favorite at post time and the final odds against him were down about 1 to 5. McEvelys backers reaped odds of more than 25 to 1. due to the overwhelming play on the defeated Tannery. The Prichard colt was ridden by R. Fin-nerty. From a good start Pendergrass, alert on McEvely, had the Moore colt away rapidly and McEvely assumed the task of setting the pace. Tannery began slowly, but, with his high speed, quickly overtook the others and raced in closest pursuit of McEvely in the first quarter mile. Tannery repeated by challenging the leader, especially after reaching the stretch turn, but McEvely always held him safe and in the run home drew away handily to be an easy winner, but was ridden out to make sure of the victory. After challenging so strongly on the stretch turn. Tannery reached the flank of McEvely, but seemingly began tiring and his heavy impost told on him in the final stages. Tannery, carrying 122 pounds, conceded six pounds in weight to McEvely and this seemed to have a great deal to do with his defeat. Tannery tired in the final drive when unable to ovenake McEvely, held on resolutely and showed his superiority over the other starters and kept second place safe easily. Tannery finished two and one-half lengths in the wake of the winner, but another two lengths in advance of Mr. Dick, the starter Continued on twenty-fourth page. Mr. Dick raced prominently throughout and, finishing gamely, lasted to outgame Parnell Bound for third place. Vicksburg and Governor Peay were the other two starters. Maiden two-year-olds started over five and a half furlongs in the initial offering and there was a victory for the P. T. Chinn racer, Sam Pass, which finally graduated into the ranks of winners. Perjury showed a good performance, which netted her second place, while Helen Bond, an outsider and one of the field horses, was the one to account for the minor award. Sam Pass, ridden well by V. Wallis, prevailed as favorite, while the second choice. Princess Isabel, finished tiring in fourth place. Harold Ormont, with a fine display of early speed, set the pace to the stretch, where he tired and soon dropped out of contention. Sam Pass, a close up contender to the stretch, then slowly worked his way into the lead and held Perjury safe at the end. Thistle Lad and Royal Spade, with a good show of early speed for the first three-eighths, dropped out of it suddenly entering the stretch. There was a complete failure of the favorites in the second, when Sweepstakes, Thistle Beauty and Blue Blood, the well backed ones, finished among the unplaced. Sweepstakes was the favorite, but this veteran racer was the victim of a poor ride and ran one of his bad races. The erratic Chick Up again refused to leave the starting point with the others and wheeled to the inside at the start. Frank Hawley proved a big surprise and got up in the late stages to wear down Glee in the final strides. Glee, completely overlooked, appeared the winner after taking the lead near the last eighth, but tired in the final few yards and could not stall off the winner. Chicola came fast with a strong challenge in the final three-sixteenths, getting up to just nose out Blue Blood for third place. Thistle Beauty and Blue Blood shared the early pacemaking to the stretch, both tiring thereafter. Lewis and Kemps veteran racer Miss Rose-dale, racing in her best form, was an easy winner of the third race, in which she defeated some of the better grade platers. Hypnotism finished closest in the wake of the winner for second place and led in Witch-mount, the latter only just lasting to save third place by a head from the fast-finishing Polygamia. Miss Rosedale, though fairly well regarded, proved something of a mild surprise. Miss Rosedale, quick to begin, Immediately raced away into a good lead and, proceeding to show the most speed throughout, easily made every post a winning one. Hypnotism and Witehmount were always in closest pursuit of the leader, holding second and third places to the end. Stampdale was the favorite in this race, while Eloise, second choice, also proved a big disappointment. Mrs. R. Pollards Lucky Flay and jockey J. Parmalee proved the winning combination in the fourth race. Lucky Play being returned an easy winner at the end of one mile, leading Lucky Drift by a margin of three lengths. Lucky Drift, always in closest pursuit of Lucky Play, which led virtually all the way, held on gamely and kept second place safe from Isoard to the end. Isoard. under restraint in the early stages, responded well when called on entering the stretch, and worked his way up past the others to third place, outfinishing the tiring Last Thought in the final sixteenth. Lucky Plays success was anticipated and the Fol-lard colorbearer went to the post favorite and was the second public choice to make good during the afternoon.
