V FAIR GROUNDS IMPROVEMENT The Fair Grounds at New Orleans has always been considered the last word in construction and beauty in winter race tracks. Its only drawback has been in the strip of racing ground itself, and this is being remedied. In a letter from James M. Murphy, the general manager, the information was contained that the infield ditch has been moved back some twenty feet from the inside rail, and from the fifteen-sixteenths post to the head of the stretch, in front of the grandstand and clubhouse, it has been tiled so that no ditch shows at all. There is a manhole every thirty-three feet. It is believed that this will prevent the seepage from the ditch and permit the track to dry out considerably faster. General manager Murphy expects to be in Chicago during most of the Hawthorne meeting.
