NEAL POPULAR RIDER ♦ Skill Factor in Victory of M. Deatherages Montanaro. ♦ Son of Ormont Lowers Track Record at Washington Park — Rancocas Colors in Front. 1 HOMKWOOD, 111., June 26.— Jockey P. Heal, whose riding at Washington Park has been consistent and uniformly good, added much to his popularity by landing Montanaro a winner in the South Shore Handicap, which brought five starters to the post. The race •was over one mile and an eighth and it resulted in a new track record when Montanaro galloped the distance in l-.SO2. Canaan, ridden by Shropshire, was favorite, •with Dowagiac and Sir Harry also having at considerable backing. Canaan and Sir Harry were victims of poor riding. Sir Harry also suffered interference. Neal kept Montanaro under restraint, •while Dowagiac moved into a good lead, but lie followed the leader closest and not until the stretch was reached did Xeal begin his determined effort to wear down the fast-finishing Dowagiac. He timed his effort to a nicety and Montanaro, responding gamely, steadily decreased the distance separating him from Dowagiac and in the last seventy yards, riding desperately, he succeeded in getting Montanaro home by a short magin. Canaan, after being taken all over the track, finished in third place, a considerable distance in advance of Sir Harry. Neal was cheered on his return to weigh in. The youngster has become popular with Chicago racegoers by his aggressiveness and has finished in the money fifteen times in sixteen races up to his ride on Irene T. GOOD PROGRAM. A splendid program, promising good sport, coupled with the ideal racing conditions, was responsible for the best mid-week attendance of the present meeting. Speculative activities were on a par with the occasion, but the repeated failure of favorites caused a big loss for the majority in the crowd. Neal began an auspicious afternoon when he piloted to victory W. R. Coes Tombereau in the opening race and after riding Montanaro to his success he followed with a victory on T. D. Taggarts Irene T., in the sixth lace. On the latter occasion he clearly outgeneraled Yelton, astride Jack Hawksley, an I won by a matter of inches. Meander landed in third place. Irene T. had been kept m close pursuit of Meander until straightened cut in the stretch, where Neal sent Irene T. into a good lead and virtually stole the ra.-e before Yelton realized it. The latters determined ride brought Jack Hawksley with a rush through the stretch, but the alertness of JVeal caused Jack Hawksley to miss victory by a nose. A masterly ride by L. Morris, who clearly MetgMM Titled C. K. Allen enabled the Audky Farm Stable to earn its first purse this season on a Chicago track, when Fortunes Favorite beat home Symphorosa by a head. The latter was probably best, but Allen blundered by riding wide for the entire mile and seventy yards. Genghis Khan finished in third place. The latter was rushed hard from the start and took a good lead, but the «ruly effort began telling on him when he reached the stretch and he began tiring fast iu the last eighth. Fortunes Favorite, which hud ben iu:«.er rcMrunt for half a mile, saved ground by staying close to the inner rail and beginning the stretch moved up in RwSOlotC fashion and in the sharp struggle that ensued in the last sixteenth. Fortunes Favorite had the better of it Mai outstayed Symphorosa. Judge Hay, favorite, gave way completely after reaching the stretch after having followed Genghis Khan closest for three-quarters. Itllllllll WINS. Jockey P. Neal and W. R. Coes representatives continue formidable and again this combination registered victory when Tombereau was home in advance of fourteen Other juveniles in the maiden race that began the Am] s sport. Tombereau never gave his backers much concern after the first quarter •f the five and a half furlongs had been concluded. Sweet Sentiment gave the winner Some early contention, but. when beginning the stretch, Tombereau moved out to win as his rider pleased. Sweet Sentiment held on Well to save second place and was considerably in advance of the fast-finishing Who Wm. The latter had some early trouble Working his way up. but aided by saving ground in the stretch, was up in the final Strides to dispose of Herman Cortes for third place. Red Leather, favored in the second race, ■M a handy winner, followed by Frances Stock and Haaal Denson. The winner led most of the way and only briefly in the Stretch wis she urged to any extent. She finished gamely near the end and well in hand. The field was away closely grouped and L. Jones at once began taking Helen E.. a well Continued on twentieth paec NEAL POPULAR RIDER Continued from first page. backed one, out of it. She also suffered interference and closed an immense gap after being far out of it, but the loss of ground entailed by her racing extremely wide disposed of any chance she might have had to land part of the purse. In the Hill Top Purse, attracting some good two-year-olds, the Rancocas Stables Lahor won in spectacular style from Lady Buyer, after the latter appeared a certain winner. She began fast and, aided by cutting across the others, was enabled to moe into a ten-lengths lead before beginning the stretch turn. Lahor and Passalong, which had met with some interference, were quickest to recover and set sail for the flying leader. Passalong gave it up after Shropshire, on Lahor, had forced her steadily to the rail, Xeal, on the Coe filly, taking back, but Lahor continued after Lady Buyer and, under energetic riding, the Rancocas representive succeeded in wearing down the fast quitting Lady Buyer in the final strides. Jockey McDermott, on Lady Buyer, was hissed after the finish by those who though he rode her poorly in the last sixteenth. Lady Buyer simply quit and she had all the best of it in the race when she caused a mixup at the first turn.
