ODD-DAY CARD AT HAMILTON ♦ No Feature Race on Program at Canadian Track. « Saratoga Maje Outstays Ebnford After Hard Drive to Win Parse in Best Itace •f the Afternoon. HAMILTON", Ont., June 26.— What was meant for a feature at the Hamilton Jockey Club course was the fourth race, bringing out some of the better grade sprinters to race three-quarters under claiming conditions. Eight started, with the winning portion of the prize money falling to Saratoga Maje, from the stable of P. F. Joyce, when, in a sinew-straining drive with H. Haymakers Kbuford, the Joyce starter got up in the final strides to get the verdict by a nose. Heartache, racing for Mrs. H. D. Cox. earned third money, and Fair Thorn led Fire Brigade and the others. Little time was lost at the barrier and Saratoga Maje raced away into a brief lead while the others, with the exception of Benny Rubin, were racing close up. Saratoga Maje lost command as the field left the back stretch, when Ebuford ranged alongside, but he followed the hitters heels and, coming •gain when straightened out for the final drive, gradually wore down his rivals and, under hard riding, was able to poke his nose in front at the critical moment, to earn the purse. Kbuford was five lengths clear for second place. SHOWERS SOFTEN TRACK. No race of outstanding importance was listed for the third day of the meeting at the local course, but a well arranged program brought out the best crowd since the opening day. Slight showers did not seriously affect the track, although the footing softened during the afternoon. All of the races staged, with the exception of the opening race on the card, were decided under claiming conditions. The Bronte Purse, fashioned exclusively for maiden juveniles of Canadian breeding, to test their speed over the short four and a half furlongs route, resulted in a big surprise when tlranite Rock, under the colors of P. Lamante, turned up the winner to score in rather easy fashion, finishing two lengths in advance of W. H. Wrights Archipelago, which raced coupled with Flanders Field. Third fell to Jug of Gold, one of the choices, while Peace Rock led the others. Jockey O. Brown made an auspicious return to the saddle when he rode H. G. Bed-wells Fair Bob to victory in the second race of the afternoon, in which he matched strides with some good sprinters. At the end Fair Bob showed the way to the public choi"o. Malcolm, by a length while Fire Line landed in third place to take the measure of Play Flower and the four remaining starters. Fair Bob had good speed after outrunning the others from a moving start and after resisting challenges from Harborton and Ironmaster in the first half, staved off the final rush of Malcolm, which came through on the inside in the stretch, and was gaining on the winner near the finish. FLETCHER COLORS TO FORE. For the second time during the afternoon, L ominion-breds were called on to furnish the entertainment, when a field of nine started in the race that was third on the card. In this Wilhelmina, racing for J. C. Fletcher, turned up an easy winner when she scored by four lengths from J. P. Mayberrys Melva Rose, while Plaguer raced into third place, beaten by a head by the Mayberry starter. Melva Rose was quickest to get into her stride and she raced into a good lead going down the back stretch. Arrant Jude was offered the most contention, while the ultimate winner raced in advance of the others. Leaving the back stretch, Wilhelmina went to the outside and before being straightened out for the stretch run had overtaken Melva Rose and had little difficulty thereafter in drawing clear. Of the eight platers that contested the mile and one-sixteenth of the fifth race, there was little to the running so far as Charley J. S., from the Highland Stable, was concerned, as he made a show of his opponents by sprinting into a long lead soon after the rise of the barrier and, enjoying his commanding advantage, reached the end of the route to finish seven lengths in advance of Fire Rock, racing for EL Haymaker. Chairman landed third for 11. G. Bedwell. EL Long rode the winner and at no stage of the test was he called on to release his mount from stiff restraint. When Amen-Ra emerged victorious in the mile and seventy yards of the sixth race, _a double was recorded for the Highland Stable and, incidentally, both were ridden by Long. Amm-R-i was favored greatly by improved riding over his previous start at this meeting, with the result that he was good enough to take command soon after the start and had no trouble leading for the entire way to register in a mild drive a length and one-half to the good of Lannie, with Rock Thorn lasting to save third from Reigh Shot.
