EXCEPTIONAL PERFORMANCE Desert Light in Outstanding Workout at Churchill Downs. Gallops Ona aille In 1:-13 In Preparation for Kentucky Derby Victorian Works Half. LOUISVILLE, Ky., April 3. Mrs. Graham Fair Vanderbilts Kentucky Derby candidate Desert Light will not prove a disappointment in the race if he continues to hold his present form. When he negotiated one mile in company with Chicatie at Douglas Park this morning in 1 :43 it was the outstanding workout of the year for a Derby eligible. The track was not at its best, which made the workout more impressive. It was good next to the inner rail, but had greasy spots in the soil left by the rainfall of Wednesday night. Desert Light was rated perfectly, going the first quarter in :2G, half in :52 and first three-quarters in 1 :18. He was under restraint all the way and could have eclipsed this mark if trainer Alex Gordon desired. Sarazen II., another Derby candidte from the Fair stable, was sent three-quarters with Byrd, his usual workmate, and ran the distance in 1 :18. It is naturally to be expected that both these Derby horses will improve with racing over the Metropolitan courses, where they will be campaigned prior to filling their engagement in the Derby on Saturday, May 17. There was little activity among the trainers of Derby candidates at the Downs, the move of Bellsmith of a quarter being in the nature of a preliminary sprint for a more ambitious move Friday. He ran the distance in :2G. Victorian, the Warm stables crack handicap horses, which won the Agua Caliente Handicap, was on the track at the Downs this morning and galloped a half mile in :52, fighting for his head. A number of horses arrived from the southern tracks, Douglas Park getting the majority of the consignments. E. H. Von Roenn brought Colonel Bell, Dolly Seth, The Huguenot, Fleda Seth, Applaud and Flying Pal to the Highland Park track where the horses of W. F. Poison also secured quarters. The thoroughbreds in the latter establishment were Peace Boy, a Derby candidate, Lady Basil, Mabel Basil and the following two-year-olds: Bella Basil, ch. f, by Basil Carrie Moore; Sonny Basil, ch. c, by Basil Mabel Curtis ; Prudy Basil, ch. f, by Basil Prudy ; Lina Basil, ch. f, by Basil Lavinia ; Teace Buddy, b. c, by Peace Pennant Eris, and Peace Jimmy, Peace Johnny and Peace Continued on twelfth page. EXCEPTIONAL PERFORMANCE Continued from first, page. Lady, the latter three having raced at New Orleans. Mr. Poison intends to take up King Basil and place him in training again. George Land brought in the two-year-olds Head First and Norse First, belonging to OConnell and Bateman, and Spanish Flag and Leah Jane for M. G. Goode. Joe Stephen, trainer for the Graceland Stable, owned by SI. P. Slurnan, realtor of Columbus, Ohio, who has a breeding farm adjacent to his home city where the stallion Mechanic is doing stud duty, brought in six horses from New Orleans. They are Club House, Widely Known, H. Thurston, P. J. Flaherty, Little Grace and Graceland Lady, which were assigned stall room at Douglas Park. Stephen will receive nine two-year-olds from Colunbus by the first of next week. One is by Epinard, one by Ladkin and one by Waygood, the remainder being home-bred youngsters of Sir. Slurnan. It. T. Runnels got in from New Orleans with the A. J. Stallings horses Slaidens Choice, Royal Sport, Brett and Nancy Jane, while his own stock embraced High Storm and Zadora Slay. Jim Gass was notified en route to Latonia from Florida, with the horses of C. E. Hamilton of Covington, to unload at Douglas Park as the Latonia track is being regraded and resoiled. His band consisted of Herrick, Our Own, Royal Son, General Keeps, Pere Noel.
