NEW YORK RULES SUPREME : Form Beiter Observed en Jockey Club Tracks Than Elsewhere Percentage of Winning Favorites High for Last Twenty Years Xew York, as shown in figures published not long ago, is the stronghold of "forhi" in this country. The average number of favorites, which win on the Empire City state tracks, is considerably above that for other tracks in other sections. Despite the higher average of favorite winners, there is a leveling process which evens t.vngs up for the players in sections other than Xew York ; the odds against the favorites. Six thousand five hundred and sixty-seven public choices won on Xew York tracks in the period of years from 1911 to 1929. Two thousand six hundred and forty-one were at odds-on. That is about the average of the total number of favorites for the total number of races won during those years, which is to say, about forty-four per cent of the favorites that won were at odds-on. One thousand six hundred and ten favorites at odds-on were defeated. Three thousand six hundred and sixty-five second choices won. Before going farther it should be stated that the total number of races in the tabulation was 14,992. Four thousand seven hundred and forty-seven outsiders won, which does not .rpeak well for the "long shots" iii Xew York. More than ten thousand of the nearly fifteen thousand races run in the state from 1911 to 1929 were won by first or second eiioioes. That is just about sixty-six and two-thirds per cent, with "long shots" having only a thirty-three and one-third per cent chance of winning a race in the state. According to the figures, half of the favorites were held at odds-on. This is where the leveling process sands out. The odds against favorites in sections other than Xew York are, speaking off-hand, about two to one better than in Xew York. Turf enthusiasts, on first scanning the remarkable figures for the Empire state, may be inclined to believe that Xew Yorkers fare better than they do in their racing, but such is not the case. One favorite winning at two to one is better than two favorites winning at odds-on. Following are the figures for Xew York from 1911 up to and including 1929: Winning Defeated Vcr Cent Year.
