DEDICATE . OUT OF KENTUCKY C7l DERBY . BAD KNEE THE REASON X-Ray Reveals Growth, Requiring Immediate Treatment. . Fire Irons to Be Applied and Colt Retired From Racing Until Fall. LEXINGTON, Ky., April 29. Dedicate is out of the Kentucky Derby. This startling information was made known today after the penetrating rays of the X-ray applied to the left knee of Dedicate, the Everglade Stables crack son of Dodge and On Time, which held such a high place among the candidates for the coming renewal of the Kentucky Derby, revealed a bunchy growth, requiring immediate treatment that will force the colt out of the Derby and other spring and early summer engagements. Dedicate, a disappointment in his race with Buckeye Poet, Sydney and other of the western Derby hopefuls here last Saturday, was under the X-ray this morning and the result of the examination, while not altogether surprising to John S. Ward, his trainer and as- sociated with Frederick A. Burton of Chicago in his ownership, offers ample explanation of his failure to exhibit the brilliant form he showed as a two-year-old last year. While assured that he could continue racing the colt without great fear of his going entirely lame. Ward, who regards him highly, decided to take no further chances and arranged for his firing by Dr. Proctor, local veterinary, at the earliest possible time. TO BE TUItXED OUT. Following application of the irons, Ward will keep the colt in his stable for about three weeks, after which he will be turned out at Howard Blacks Silver Lake farm in Franklin County. Ward plans to prepare him for fall campaigning. In a discussion of the colt this afternoon, Ward indicated that Dedicates infirmity probably was sustained during the running of the Eastern Shore Handicap at Havre de Grace last fall or a short time later, but it was not until Monday that a slight filling was noticed. The colt won the Eastern Shore, the most notable of his successes during his initial year. During his preparation for a resumption of racing this spring, Dedicate manifested an unnatural nervousness, no doubt induced by the ailing knee, and Ward did riot indulge him severely in his final preparation for his race last Saturday. His withdrawal from the Derby field leave3 a gap in the ranks of the western hopefuls and the announcement is certain to occasion much regret among the numerous admirers of the Everglade star.
