Derby Week at Churchill Downs 1 Mate, Twenty Grand, Equipoise and Other Eastern Stars Arrive ♦ All Prospective Contestants for Fifty-Seventh Running of Blue Grass "Classic," With Exception of Mor stone, on Scene of Big Race « LOUISVILLE, Ky., May 11— Mate. Equipoise, Twenty Grand, Surf Board, Ladder and Anchors Aweigh, foremost of the eastern invaders for Saturdays fifty-seventh annual running of the 0,000 added Kentucky Derby, arrived at the Downs from Pimlico this afternoon. All stood the trip in fine fashion and unloaded before the largest gallery ever assembled at the chute. Mate, A. C. Bostwicks winner of the Preakness at Pimlico Saturday, was in charge of trainer James Healy, while James Rowe looked after Mrs. Payne Whitneys Twenty Grand, Surf Board and Anchors Aweigh, and Jack Pryce, assistant to trainer Pat Dwyer, accompanied W. J. Salmons Ladder. Freddie Hopkins travelled with Equipoise, C. V. Whitneys star. In addition to the Derby trio, Rowe brought seven two-year olds to be placed in the western division of the Green-tree Stable, trained by Edward Haughton. Equipoise had a companion in Totem, and Mad Career made the trip with Ladder. With the Whitney, Bostwick and Salmon aspirants on the grounds, the lone absentee among the certain starters is Benjamin Blocks Morstone, which filled an engagement at Jamaica this afternoon and leaves that New York course for the Downs tomorrow. CYNOSURE OF ALL EYES. Needless to say, all of the Derby colts came in for wide admiration while making the short walk from the unloading chute to their respective quarters. Mrs. Whitneys trio were put in the Greentree barn, while Equipoise and Totem joined the Whitney horses here in charge of Mose Goldblatt. Ladder was quartered in the same barn occupied by Theodore E. Muellers Pittsburgher, one of the outstanding western hopes, and Mate went into roomy quarters in the Parkway Stable. Under training programs arranged for the eastern colts, they will have their final brisk preparations Wednesday or Thursday, and none will be seen under colors before Saturdays race. Jockey L. Shaefer, who will have the mount on Ladder, which he drove into third place in the Preakness, was the only jockey in the entourage. He will be astride the Salmon colt in his final stiff workout Wednesday. Jockey. R. Workman, who will ride Equipoise, is due Tuesday, and C. Kurt-singer is expected at the same time. The latter will ride Twenty Grand. George Ellis, who rode Mate in the Preakness, will arrive Wednesday, and trainer Healey will have him up when Mate receives his final preparations Thursday morning. MAY START TRIO OF STARS. Barring a change, trainer Rowe may send all of the Greentree colts to the Derby post. Before leaving Maryland he closed with jockey E. Steffen to come here with L. McAtee and if Anchors Aweigh and Surf Board start, McAtee will guide Surf Board with Steffen astride Anchors Aweigh. Such of the western candidates as Charles T. Fishers Sweep All. Knebelkamp and Morris" Spanish Play, Joseph Leiters Prince DAmour and the rangy Pittsburgher were groomed today for their final pre-Derby test in the one and a sixteenth Derby Trial at the Downs tomorrow. Pittsburgher and Spanish Play were breezed a half over a muddy track at the Downs this morning, and Prince DAmour went three-eighths through slop at Douglas Park. Pittsburgher was timed in :52, while Spanish Play went in :524i, and Prince DAmour in :36%. Conditions of the trial require Sweep All, Spanish Play and Pittsburgher to carry 115 pounds each, while Prince DAmour gets in with 112 pounds. In addition to that quartet, the race attracted Major Lanphier and The Mongol. As Derby week opens, representatives from all parts of the country apprised of extensive preparations to attend the renewal of the "Classic," which promises one of the greatest contests in the record of the fixture. Churchill Downs officials are making every effort to meet the demands for reservations, and if the present flow of requests continues through tomorrow, the present tremendous capacity of the stands, club house, fields and lawn sections will be increased.
