Y., June 16.— St. Francis, racing under the silks of Mrs. Milton W. j Holden, and handily ridden by Mack Gar- ; ner, was winner of the best offering here J today when he won the Rockaway Claim- . ing Stakes. It had a net value of ,800 , to the winner, and it was E. R. Bradleys Bathorse that raced to second place, with W. R. Coes Masked Ball saving third from C. A. Grandes Nyack. The rain of the night and early morning made the footing sloppy and resulted in a number of scratches. There was no rain during race hours, and the attendance was large, with the sport of a good quality. It was a card given over to sprinters, with juveniles performing in three of the six races. The only race over longer distance than the feature was the mile and a half hurdle, which went to Elegant, and thereby completed a double for the Audley Farm Stable. In the Rockaway Claiming Stakes it was Jubilate, from the Brookmeade Stable, that set the pace until well into the long stretch. The son of Lucky Hour was at home in the footing, and when Baker got him away in motion he led Masked Ball, with St. Francis and Panetian leading the others. PANETIAN QUITS. It was on the turn out of the back stretch that St. Francis interfered slightly with Panetian and the Widener colt dropping back rather badly. It was the end of him as a contender. Masked Ball raced with Jubilate until she made him quit, and a furlong out she looked a winner, but Garner had not asked St. Francis for his best, and when he shook up the grey he readily went to the front to cross the line winner by two lengths. In the meantime Bathorse, far back in the early stages, was moving up rapidly on the outside. He caught the tiring Masked Ball in the final seventy yards to beat her by a length and a half for second place, and in a few more strides she would also have been beaten by Nyack, which was only beaten by a head for third. A race at five furlongs, for maiden juve- ! niles. under claiming conditions, was the . first offering, and it saw Altmark, from the Audley Farm Stable, a handy winner over ; Mea, from the Sagamore Stable, and Mrs. N. L. Byers* Outguess beat James Fitz- i Simmons Afridi for third. I When the filly Elegant was winner of the I mile and a half race over the hurdles it I made two in a row for the Audley Farm Stable. In this contest there were only three starters, and Joseph E. Wideners Bagatelle was second. The other, Val Cranes Char- l marten, met with a peculiar accident i while running around the lower turn, he slipped on the wet turf and fell. He was later remounted by Mahoney and completed the course for third money. Until he went down Charmarten was racing closely after Elegant, but the filly at all times showed the way. Bagatelle dropped far out of it in the first mile, but at the end he was catching Elegant, which was tiring. Bellhouse rode her out briskly to win by five lengths. Elmer Truman saddled his second winner of the day, and Robertson rode his second winner when Ral Parrs Some Knight scored in the third, a split of the first race, for maiden two-year-olds of the plater variety. As in the opening race, Robertson had his mount forcing the pace throughout, but at the end he was tiring and doing his best to win from W. R. Coes Diggins, and it was ; Southco, from the Kilrane stable, that saved third from Polo Bar. Some Knight began well but he was never ! able to draw away from the others, and in the early stages Southco was close after Some Knight, but he tired badly in the , going and in the final furlong Diggins made such a determined effort that Robertson i had to put up a vigorous finish to have . his mount the winner by three-quarters, of a length. Southco saved third but he was two and a half lengths back of Diggins, and Polo Bar was at the heels of the Kilrane gelding. Morfair, the two-year-old brother of Mor-stone, was an easy winner of the fifth race, and the third of the day for two-year-olds. He dominated the race, and it was Regal I Flag, from the Pinetree Stable, that raced to second place, with J. H. Louchheims ; Glendair easily saving third from Maidee. . Morfair was so much the best that there ! was nothing to this race. Workman sent t him into an early lead, and in the final furlong - he was looking back at the others. At the end of the card the consistent : Single Star won his fourth consecutive purse : for E. F. Sanford when he outgamed Mrs. . Thomas R. Queens Angry Plume, while ; H. W. Maxwells Voila was third. There was an accident in this running when i Robert A. Fairbairns Greens, while in a l contending position, fell with jockey Pichon, , who was not badly hurt. •
