NO STANDOUT . FOR AMERICAN DERBY -fl i ■ Most Open Race Since Famous Event Was Revived in 1926 ♦ ■ — Mate, Sun Meadow, Sweep All, Spanish Play, Light* ning Bolt, Ladder, Boys Howdy, Pittsburgher and Others Among Certain Starters HOMEWOOD, 111., June 16. — From every angle the race over one mile and one quarter for honors in the 0,000 added American Derby, to be run Saturday, at Washington Park, shapes up as the most open in any running since the fixture was revived in 1926 and a very outstanding contest of the three-year-olds of the current season. Although Twenty Grand, the great Kentucky Derby winner and conqueror of Sun Meadow and Jamestown in the Belmont Stakes, will not be in the large field, starters will include Mate, winner of the 0,000 added Preakness Stakes, in which Twenty Grand finished second; Sun Meadow, which outstayed Jamestown stown to to be be the the runner runner up up to to Twenty Twenty Grand Grand 1 j ; J . , stown to to be be the the runner runner up up to to Twenty Twenty Grand Grand ,at the end of the one mile and one-half in the Belmont Stakes, and Sweep All, generally recognized champion of the western three-year-old division and second in the Kentucky Derby. Also Spanish Play, winner of the Louisiana Derby; Lightning Bolt, first in the Florida Derby; Boys Howdy, triumphant over the best of the older horses raced in Florida and Cuba last winter in the Cuban Grand National Handicap at Oriental Park; Oswego and Knights Call, among the most successful western juveniles last year; Pittsburgher, The Mongol, Ladder, Joey Bibb and possibly Hyman, Sunny Lassie, Quatra Bras II. and Scotlands Glory. GREAT CONTEST ASSURED. Meeting as they will, under slightly varying imposts, the outcome of this battle of three-year-old titans, all at the peak of racing condition, presents every assurance that the race should develop a contest long to be remembered. Several good judges are of the opinion that at the distance, Twenty Grand, which would have to carry top weight of 126 pounds, would find it most difficult, if not beyond his ability, to work his way through the large field to a victory. In the Kentucky Derby Twenty Grand, engaging Sweep All at equal weights of 126 pounds, led the latter imported son of Sweep and Nettie Hastings by four lengths at the close of the Derby route of one mile and a quarter. In Saturdays race Sweep All will carry 118 pounds and, under the changed weights from the Churchill Downs race to prevail for the American Derby, would have a royal chance to turn the tables on the Kentucky Derby winner. By the same reasoning Mate, which carries 126 pounds Saturday, must improve over his Kentucky Derby performance to defeat Sweep All, Spanish Play and Boys Howdy, the latter two fourth and fifth, as named, in the Louisville race. Spanish Play is to carry 121 and Boys Howdy 118 pounds Saturday, the former having five pourds off from the Kentucky Derby and the latter eight pounds. I ightning Bolt, which also gets in with 121 pounds Saturday; Sun Meadow, with 118 pounds up; Oswego, with 118, and Knights Call, with a like impost, are others high in calculations as to the probable outcome of the race. MATE IN FINE FETTLE. Mate, third in the Kentucky Derby, is in superb fettle for the Washington Park race and A. C. Bostwick, his owner and trainer, is satisfied that he will reach the post for hi3 next engagement in better condition than was the result at Churchill Downs, where unfavorable training conditions interfered with his conditioning preparation. The son of Prince Pal is certain to make a great bid for the post of betting favorite Saturday, yet many look for Sweep All, western crownholder, to edge him out for that honor. Mate, unloaded at Washington Park Monday afternoon, was under saddle this morning and "opened up" a quarter in :23s5. He will be indulged with his final stiff workout Wednesday. Trainer Edward Haughton again exhibited Mrs. John Hay Whitneys Lightning Bolt at his best when the Wrack gelding worked the Derby distance :n 2:08%, very handily, over the Homewood track early this morning. He went the three-quarters in 1:15, the mile in 1:40% and one mile and an eighth in 1:54. Continued on twenty-first page. I ; . ! t - : : . ; i l , . . i . 3 , NO STANDOUT FOR DERBY Continued from first page. Over at Lincoln Fields, where excellent training conditions also prevailed, the Mad-1 den Brothers The Mongol was sent a like distance in 2:10, handily, the mile in 1:41%. The Mongol is almost certain to be selected over Conscience and Bosafabo to carry the Madden silks in Saturdays race. The latter two, working in company, negotiated the mile distance in 1:46%, breezing, at the same track this morning. Sun Meadow and other of the horses T. Roderick is training for K. E. Hitt, arrived at Arlington Park Monday, according to in-; formation received at Washington Park, and, barring accident, the son of Sun Briar and Red Clover will make the short trip to Homewood at least twenty-four hours before Derby post time. Realizing the likeliness of the race overshadowing all others of the present meeting, enthusiasts from near and far are losing no time obtaining their Derby day jservations, and such are selling rapidly at both the track and downtown offices of the Wash-! ington Park Jockey Club. Track officials look for a complete sell-out for the day and, if propitious weather prevails, a throng up-t wards of 60,000 is expected to witness the race. ■
