The array of titans comprises eleven colts, three geldings and a single filly and, barring a change from the mid-summerlike, clear weather that blistered this section today, the eleven or twelve to start will compare speed and stamina over a track at its best. The certain starters under favorable conditions will be Mate, Sun Meadow, Boys Howdy, Spanish Play, Oswego, Knights Call, Morpheus, Lightning Bolt, Pittsburger, Joey Bibb and The Mongol, while Don Leon, Royal Ruffin and Sunny Lassie are not expected to answer the bugle call, and Ladder has an even chance to escape the gruelling contest . certain to develop. * The three-year-olds named to start in the American Derby are as follows: I | PP. Walker | Mate, A. C. Bostwicks winner of the Preakness Stakes, which finished third to Twenty Grand and Sweep All in the Kentucky Derby, is expected to rule a slight favorite over Sun Meadow, the improved son of Sun Briar, which carried the racing silks of Katherine Elkins Hitt into second place in the Belmont Stakes a nose in front of Jamestown, but well in the wake of Twenty Grand, mightiest of the division. Both Mate and Sun Meadow are eastern invaders, as is Ladder, Walter J. Salmons entry, and the 5 others, with the lone exception of Boys Howdy, which races for Harry C. Hatch, of Toronto, are confirmed westerners. In his attempt to account for the fixture Mate will be burdened with the top weight of 126 pounds, while Spanish Play and Lightning Bolt carry 121 pounds each and others of the colts and geldings 118 pounds each. Sunny Lassie, the only filly entered, gets in with 113 pounds. Without exception, the destined contestants are in superb condition and there is great promise of their meeting resulting in the outstanding race of the year, if not the most spectacular in several seasons. Under clear skies a crowd of 60,000 or more is expected to gather for the great turf spectacle and the wide interest in the outcome and great importance of the race swings attention of all enthusiasts throughout the land to Washington Park for the day. Chicagos elite, scores of notables from points throughout Illinois and adjacent states, and many prominent patrons and devotees from points throughout the country will distinguish the tremendous throng. DERBY AT WASHINGTON PARK Continued from first page. race is attracting more visitors to Chicago than any one since the revival of the sport in this state, according to Col. M. J. Winn, executive director of the Washington Park Jockey Club. The intersectional aspect of the race, eclipsed only by that of the Kentucky Derby, Americas premier classic for three-year-olds, decided last month at Churchill Downs, Louisville, surpasses that attached to any previous running since the prize was revived in 1926 and, while the easterners, Mate and Sun Meadow, are expected to be honored as the choices in the betting, those holding out for a "home" or western triumph are counting chiefly upon Knebelkamp and Morris Spanish Play. This winner of the Louisiana Derby, which finished fourth in the Kentucky Derby, is probably capable of finer performance tomorrow than at any time during his career. Lightning Bolt, Mrs. John Hay Whitneys winner of the Florida Derby, is another stalwart among the western hopefuls. In a recent race at Washington Park he defeated some of the candidates from this section, and since, further buoyed up confidence about his camp by turning in some of the most impressive trials credited a western candidate. Others almost certain of opportunity to win the honors for the West are Gallaher and Combs Oswego, B. B. Jones Knights Call, Madden Brothers The Mongol, Syufy and Noyes Morpheus, Theodore E. Muellers Pittsburgher, and C. C. Van Meters Joey Bibb. From the standpoint of speed, Knights Call starred as a number of the starters in the big field went through final trials this morning. The crack son of Bright Knight and Florence Nightingale just about duplicated the exceptional public rehearsal of Sun Meadow of Thursday afternoon, when he clicked off three-quarters in 1:12% breezing, and galloped out seven-eighths in 1:25%. With Carl Meyer in the saddle, he sped over the first three-eighths in :34% and the half-mile in :47%. Oswego went three-quarters, easily, in 1:15%, the quarter in :24%, half-mile in :50%. and five-eighths in 1:02%, while Pittsburgher breezed five-eighths in 1:01% and Lightning Bolt three-quarters in 1:15. Oswego was worked by Bob Finnerty, who will have the mount on the son of Cherokee; and Lawrence McDermott, who is substituting fcr Charles Kurtsinger, piloted Lightning Bolt. Engagements at Aqueduct prevented Kurtsinger from coming here to ride the Whitney gelding. Mate, with George Ellis in the saddle, was sent three-eighths in :35% .nd eased up a half-mile in :48%, as his final p eparation, and C. E. Allen guided Spanish Play through his closing drill, a slow three-quarters for which he was timed in 1:17.
