LATONIA DERBY OPEN RACE ■ ♦ Absence of Twenty Grand Assures Large Field in Fixture. « Mate, Pittsburgher, Ladder, Boys Howdy, Si. Brideaux and Spanish Play Among - Probable Starters. • LATONIA, Ky., June 19.— The announcement that Mrs. Payne , Whitneys Twenty Grand, winner of the Kentucky Derby an | Belmont Stakes, would not be seen under silks until the running of the Dwyer Stakes, July 4, the same day that the Independence Handicap is down for decision at Latonia, and following the Latonia Derby, makes the historic Milldale race one of the most open in years. No doubt the appearance of the Kentucky Derby winner would have been a great drawing card but his elimination means that instead of a walk over or a small field, the race, with its added value of 5,000, and the richest of the six stakes to be decided during the thirty-one day meeting which gets under way here Saturday, June 27, will attract the largest field in many years. A. C. Bostwicks Mate, which came west last fall to win the Breeders Futurity at Lexington, and Walter J. Salmons Ladder, the sensation of Maryland racing, will furnish the chief opposition to the western-owned colts. However, St. Brideaux may be called on to carry the Greentree Stable colors. He was used as a work companion in bringing the Whitney pair up to their Kentucky Derby engagements, and the son of St. Germans showed enough that would warrant James Rowe. Jr. sending him west* In the event it is decided not to send St. Brideaux here, Mrs. John Hay Whitney will be called on to have her candidate represent the well known family. She named Lightning Bolt, winner of the Florida Derby, for the race. Lightning Bolt is now at Washington Park being prepared for the American Derby by Eddie Haughton, who guides the destinies of the western division of the Greentree Stable. The westerners will be represented by T. E. Muellers Pittsburgher; Knebelkamp and Morris: Spanish Play, Louisiana Derby winner; Gallaher and Combs Oswego and Back Log; C. W. Hays Scotlands Glory; Frazer A Clarence Lebus Major Lanphier; John Marschs Chief John; J. B. Respess Busy Monarch; the Audley Farms Knights Call and A. A. Baronis Upright. It is possible that C. C. Van Meter may send Joey Bibb here for this engagement. Whether Harry Hatch will ship Boys Howdy to Kentucky depends on the outcome of the American Derby. Joey Bibb has just returned to his best form after his mild illness following the Lexington meeting, while Boys Howdy showed that he was on a par with the western three-year-olds during the recent Churchill Downs meeting. Indications point to twelve or more starting, and in that event it will give the stake a gross value of more than 0,000, which will make it worth more to the winner than any year since Chilhowee won in 1924. 1 ♦
