* 1 THE AMERICAN DERBY Oh boy! this Derby winner, Is going to be hard to find, The way they have been running They all seem much of a kind. Theres hardly one of the number That you cannot pick as a "cinch," Though your conscience tells you Theres no such thing as a "cinch." For theres many a thing may happen, And many a thing go wrong, But this ere Preakness winner Is one that I fancy strong. Some will climb on the Ladder, And some on the "smoky one," And some will be counting their winnings Before the race has begun. Some I know are on Boys Howdy And some are on Spanish Play, But Sun Meadow and Lightning Bolt Are the ones I would take today. These, with the Preakness winner On the West seem to have a shade, And I think when its all over Mate will have made the grade. But whatever you back, my buddies, I hope it wont go down For theres little pleasure, if any, In walking back to town. — Kildare.
