DARK HORSES TO THE FORE Crystal Prince and Jimmy Sutro Formidable Derby Eligibles. J. J. Coughlins Camp Douglas Also Has Splendid Record Last Race Worst of Entire Career. NEW ORLEANS, La., Feb. 20. "Dark horses" are looming on the Louisiana Derby horizon at the Fair Grounds as the time for the running of the 0,000 stake approaches. Two of the racers not considered earlier in the season are now regarded as dangerous. They are Crystal Prince and Jimmy Sutro, until the last two weeks regarded as just a couple of entries in the Louisiana Derby, which will be decided March 19 at the Louisiana Jockey Clubs course. With three victories in eight starts since the start of the winter racing season in the Crescent City, Crystal Prince has come to the fore in recent weeks in impressive fashion, as all three of the triumphs have been registered within the last three weeks of racing. The other, Jimmy Sutro, has actually scored one success, but received two more decisions through disqualifications. However, the important phase of Jimmy Sutros rise is the fact that trainer Jimmy McTague is stepping the colt up with each succeeding race and the three-year-old has vindicated the judgment of his trainer. It isnt unusual for "dark horses to upset their more highly regarded rivals in big stake events and therefore the performances of Crystal Prince and Jimmy Sutro will be observed closely by students of the thoroughbred sport, despite the fact that Springsteel, Bertjohn and others are among the candidates for the classic event of winter racing. Quite a few of the Derby candidates have established impressive records during the current season. Of course, Lucky Tom, J. J. Robinsons trump card, has the most impressive score to his credit, with three victories in as many trips to the barrier. Renaissance, a stable companion of Lucky Tom, has had two outings, winning one in impressive fashion. J. J. Coughlins Camp Douglas is another with a fine record, having five victories and a second in seven starts. The Chicago politicians standardbearer is looked upon as one of the strongest contenders in the stake, despite the fact that his last start was his worst showing, finishing outside the first three for the first time in his career. S. W. Labrots Springsteel has won two races and finished among the first three on the occasion of his other four trials this season, while Col. E. R. Bradleys Bertjohn has been postward but three times, winning one and finishing third on the other two occasions. Several are regarded to be of unknown quality and among these are Merry Fox, Sarietta, Sazerac, Espinaca, Tweenie, Battling Knight and Busted. a
