RESUME RACING IN MEXICO Eligibles for Rich Handicap Meet in Agua Caliente Feature. Dr. Freeland to Carry 129 Pounds, Younger Cabezo in With 107 Track Will Operate Sunday, Monday. AGUA CALIENTE, Mexico, Feb. 20. After almost a solid week of idleness the gates at Agua Caliente will reopen Sunday, when an eight-race card will be given. -Another stellar program is being arranged for Monday, which will be celebrated as the birth date of George Washington, and the fans who have been deprived of their favorite sport, due to the elements, are expected to have eight days of racing before the usual Monday letup one week hence. The George Washington Handicap, at one mile and a sixteenth, will feature the good bill offered Sunday and will be supplemented by the Fairfax Handicap, a six furlong3 affair, and other races at varied distances. Cabezo, winner of the Derby Trial Stakes last Sunday, has been entered in both the George Washington and the Fairfax, but will, in all likelihood, face the barrier in the feature. He is coupled with Joe Flores and Burton Agnes. The entry will probably be favored to win because of the weight on the Anderson star. Cabeza is in with 107 pounds, while Dr. Freeland, also scheduled to start, must tote a package of 129 pounds. Aside from Dr. Freeland and Cabezo, at present respective split favorite and third choice in the future book on the Agua Caliente Handicap, those slated to go are Joe Flores, Burton Agnes, Durango, Daily News, Marine and Whipper Cracker. The latter will race coupled with Dr. Freeland as the Creech entry. The Agua Caliente course was ordered closed last Monday by president James N. Crofton because of the fact that the Tijuana River, which it is necessary to cross before reaching the course, went on a rampage after the heavy rains. A wooden bridge which spans the stream was so damaged by the rush of water that it was imperative that its supports be strengthened before allowing traffic to cross it and it was ordered closed by Mexican authorities Tuesday. Work on the structure was rushed and cars were allowed to cross early Saturday morning. During the recess, which is the third that the Agua Caliente management has been forced to accept since opening day, most of the horses on the grounds have been training faithfully and are ready for action. Dr. Freeland has shown such vim in morning trials that he is now an equal choice with Phar Lap in the Agua Caliente Handicap future book, while Cabezo, on the strength of his Derby Trial win, has dropped 2 points and is now quoted as 6 to 1. Marine has ascended from 10 to 20 to 1, while Plucky Play and Gallant Sir, from the Northway Stable, have been officially scratched. Treve Woodcock, trainer of Phar Lap, is bringing his charge slowly up to a race. The big fellow was on the track this morning for a gallop and breezed one mile in 1:50. Horsemen are somewhat divided as to the. chances of the Australian animal in the big race. Many consider that the contest will be little more than an exercise gallop for the son of Night Raid, while others are of the opinion that he will not be fully acclimated in time to take the measure of such a horse as Dr. Freeland. The latter appears to be in top form at present. The racing strip will be in good condition - for the sport Sunday. It was fairly good - Saturday afternoon and the track crew, un- der the supervision of track superintendent . "Pop" Crofton, were toiling diligently to have it at its best for the reopening. The Senorita Stakes, for two-year-old fillies, will 1 be the Monday feature.
