WORKOUTS FOR DERBY TRIAL Springsteel Shows Speed in Morning Gallop at Fair Grounds Bengal Tiger in Canter. NEW ORLEANS, La., Feb. 20. Springsteel, S. W. Labrots good home-bred three-year-old, second to Lucky Tom in the Jefferson Derby, first race of its kind of this year and principal stake during the recent Jefferson Park meeting, today had a useful preparation for the Derby Trial Handicap, to be run at the Fair Grounds Saturday, and the final important preliminary test of candidates for the 0,000 added Louisiana Derby, to be run here March 19. With Sir .Kendal, which, like the former Labrot racer, is eligible for the Louisiana Derby, Springsteel worked three-quarters over a slow track at the Louisiana Jockey Club course and both emerged from their trials in fine condition. Under restraint throughout, Springsteel traversed the distance in 1:20, while his stablemate, timed in 1:20, went handily. With Lucky Tom out of the Derby Trial, which will be run at a time when the J. J. Robinson colt, most successful in his division this winter and prominently mentioned as a candidate for the Kentucky Derby, will be trying for major honors in the Florida Derby at Hialeah Park, Springsteel will have a big following for next Saturdays race. In the trial he will encounter Bertjohn, Flaunt, Sir Melton, Sazerac, Jimmy Sutro, Crystal Prince, Bengal Tiger and others, and the result of the race should definitely establish the most formidable of Lucky Toms rivals for the Louisiana Derby. Bengal Tiger, E. R. Bradleys imported son of Manna, sire of Mannameade, second among the ranking three-year-olds of England this year, also worked an easy three-quarters this morning. Trainer William Hurley had him out early and, while not severely indulged to negotiate the distance in .1:23, the trial was an important one in his preparation for Saturdays test. Nominations for the Derby Trial Handicap, which carries ,000 in added money, closed tonight with all of the best colts, geldings and fillies named. Weights will be announced Wednesday. Lucky Tom, accompanied by three stable companions, will be loaded for shipment to Miami Monday night. His invasion of Hialeah Park will be under the personal supervision of H. C. Riddle, who developed the son of Master Charlie and Entourage. He is due at Miami early Wednesday. Jockey A. Pascuma will have the mount on the crack three-year-old in this engagement. Following the Florida Derby, Lucky Tom and his companions will be returned to the Fair Grounds and, after the Louisiana Derby and close of the local season, the entire Robinson stable goes to Jamaica, from where Lucky Tom will travel to Louisville for the Kentucky Derby.
