SQUEAKY, unalertly handled at the post and away slowly, was much used improving his position in the first quarter, took command quickly when PROMETHEUS raced wide and won easily thereafter. OUTCRY began fast, saved ground throughout and, holding on well, withstood TONY JOE. The latter, slow to get going and outrun for half a mile, closed ground steadily thereafter. PROMETHEUS showed good speed from the start, raced into an easy lead, but ran out badly on the turn and was in close quarters near the end. SIR JOHN K. pulled up sore. HIPPIAS was outrun. NELL KUHLMAN, forced wide all the way, was shaken up occasionally in the early stages and wore down ARRAY to win drawing clear. MAKANDA, a factor after half a mile, saved much ground in the late stages and held on gamely. ORLOFF began fast, was close up when forced back on the far turn, then responded gamely after going to the outside in the stretch. ARRAY was well rated in the lead, only to tiro in the final drive. DONNA DEAR could not get up. BRIGHT KNOT quit. VERITY BALLOT, taken back repeatedly, appeared to bear out slightlv on the second turn and can do better. SAZERAC, away fast, showed good speed and, rated along under restraint for three-quarters, continued resolutely until the final sixteenth, where he tired, but managed to hold BERTJOHN safe. The latter, also under restraint to the closing quarter, saved much ground and closed fast in the stretch after going to the outside. ESPINACA came through on the inside of DEFIER and CRYSTAL PRINCE on the far turn and outlasted CRYSTAL PRINCE, but unseated his rider when pulling up. CRYSTAL PRINCE raced wide all the way. SPANISH PLAY saved much ground when moving up near the second turn, came through on the inside on the stretch turn and, giving way to WOTAN near the closing eighth, continued stubbornly and was up to win in the final strides. WOTAN began fast and was under restraint for half a mile, lost much ground after going to the outside entering the final threecighths and, taking the lead, failed to withstand the winner. LUCKY TOM began fast, but dropped out of it suddenly when in close quarters on the far turn. SURF BOARD had no mishaps and closed gamely. SILVERDALE quit badly. PLAYTIME was outrun.
