HAVRE STAKES CLOSE APRIL 7 Four Ten Thousand Dollar Features to Be Decided During Coming Spring Meeting. HAVRE DE GRACE, Md., Feb. 20. Joseph McLennan, popular racing secretary of the Harford Agricultural and Breeders Association, whose thirteen-day spring meeting opens here on April 16, states that nominations for the four 0,000 stakes close Thursday, April 7. The first of the quartet of 0,000 stakes to be run here is listed for Saturday, April 16. It is the twentieth renewal of the three-quarters dash, for which three-year-olds and over are eligible. On Saturday, April 23, the twentieth running of the Philadelphia Handicap, a mile and a sixteenth affair, also for three-year-olds and over, will be offered. The twentieth renewal of the Aberdeen Stakes, a four and a half furlongs sprint, exclusively for two-year-olds, is carded for Wednesday, April 27. Heading the getaway day program on Saturday, April 30, will be the thirteenth renewal of the Chesapeake Stakes, a mile and a sixteenth race, exclusively for three-year-olds. This race is used annually by trainers to test their Kentucky Derby and Preakness candidates, and a poor showing in the Chesapeake usually means the offender is given a letup until later in the year. The decision of the Harford Agricultural and Breeders Association to offer four 0-000 stakes so early in the year is certain to be hailed with joy by horsemen. It gives them an opportunity to get a good start in the race to become the years largest money winning owner or trainer; therefore the four stakes are much sought. With the Kentucky Derby being run earlier than usual the trainers of the star three-year-olds will use this meeting to sharpen up their charges. It will also find them sending their "ace" distance runners post-war.d as often as possible in an effort to have them on edge for the Dixie, to be run the following month. "General Manager Edward Burke, who spent the winter in Florida, is due here within the next few weeks, at which time things will begin to speed up in regard to the approaching spring session. General Manager Burke has been assured by trainers of the majority of Americas prominent stables that they would send representatives to his meeting, and track superintendent James Ross is busy making his 1,300 available stalls, ready for the arrival of the army of thoroughbreds that will prance over the local racing strip in April. No horseman should ship here without first applying for stalls to general manager Burke or track superintendent James Ross. By doing so they will avoid much confusion and stand a much better chance of being allotted space.
