D1AQURI WINS FAST RACE * Lowers Sportsmans Park Time in La Grange Purse. ♦ Toltec Finishes Second and Jessie Carey Lands Third Place— Howtiz Scores Third Straight Victory. 1 CICERO, 111., May 18.— Diaquri, the consistent daughter of Golden Broom and Chan-teuse smashed the track record in winning the Lagrange Claiming Purse, best on Wednesdays card. F. McClellans Toltec was second, ahead of the Oakland Farm Stables Jessie Carey. The winner, in command from the break, had little opposition in her triumph, and this because apprentice J. McLaren, who was substituted for R. Cheatham on Jessie Carey, had that mare in trouble almost repeatedly for the first half-mile. The Weant entry might have been best but had to race in sensational style to obtain third money. Toltec, under vigorous handling of A. Col-vin, did get within striking distance of the winner, but after a weak bid was gradually giving way to Jessie Carey, which closed strong. A change in riders failed to work to the advantage of Fort Worth, which finished far in the rear of his successful opponents. Ideal weather prevailed for the racing, which was formful, and another good crowd was on hand. Howtiz continued his consistent form by winning his third consecutive race, but on this occasion he proved much the best to gain a nose decision over Jim Ormont. Southland Belle followed a head back and Sun Worship was fourth, beaten half a length for third money. The winner, in repeated trouble in the early stages trying to get through on the rail, was forced to ease up several times, and it was not until the horses straightened for the run through the home stretch that jockey Burney found ample room to let his mount run at full speed. Sun Worship, which was much used racing Chattahoochee into defeat, was under persistent punishment to maintain a slight advantage, but he was not equal to the task of matching strides with the successful trio and gave way completely in the closing stages. Tom Ormont turned in a smashing performance to finish second and to many of the spectators it appeared the M. J. Whalen horse got up to win, but the finish was such Continued on thirteenth page. 1 J • ■ ] I j DIAQURI WINS FAST RACE Continued from first page. that only the judges could decide. Southland Belle staged a belated rush to down the faltering Sun Worship for her share of the purse. Trainer B. Hernandez saddled another winner when Mrs. E. Denemarks Hot Time won the opening race under a powerful ride by jockey M. Harrison and, in achieving his conquest, the son of High Time and Tuscan Red established a new track record, clipping one-fifth off the mark by Diaquri. Don Worthington, an outsider, raced to second place, while third fell to Vanity Case. Apprentice J. McLaren turned in a clever performance to win on Harold Jr., which was an easy winner of the second race. Nine two-year-olds started over the five furlongs course. The winner, shuffled back at the start, was taken in hand by McLaren, whose saving of ground thereafter proved a deciding factor in the victory. Bill Buford, under the hustling riding of Bobby Reeves, took second place, while Joe Patsie, the early pacemaker, finished third. Victorious and Dr. Jillson were expected to furnish keen opposition in this, but they failed to be factors at any time after the first quarter. The most thrilling finish of the meeting resulted in the third race when the first five horses came to the wire noses apart. American Thunder got the verdict under a strong ride by jockey M. Harrison, who was astride his second consecutive winner. Jacquelyn Coogle, an outsider, was second, and Marjory Nell outfinished the favored Chiefs Camille for the third portion of the purse. •
