FUG POLE BEATS FAVORITES |B , Pompeius Third, Economic Finishes P Last in Swift Stakes. Only Four Start After Withdrawal of J Masked Knight, Dark Secret, Pending — Sydney Wins Steeplechase. ♦ NEW YORK, N. Y., May 18.— Flag Pole, from the Brookmeade Stable, upset some ir calculations at Belmont Park today when and. he was a comparatively easy winner of the a seven furlongs of the Swift Stakes, over the |j Anall Stables Larranaga, while W. R. Coes d Pompeius was a distant third, just beating J. H. Louchheims Economic for third. n There were only four starters, and before the running it was considered as strictly s between the pair so badly beaten. Economic n was making his first start since running a second to Burgoo King in the Kentucky ii Derby, while Pompeius had raced sensationally at Jamaica. The race had a net n value of ,975 to the winner. I There was a decided drop in temperature, y but a big crowd was out for the sport. The ii program was one to attract a big attend- o ance. v The Swift was reduced to four starters by $ the withdrawal of Masked Knight, a stable-mate to Pompeius, Dark Secret and Pend- s ing. Little time was lost at the post, and .; as the field left Pompeius and Economic at t once went out to show the way. They went t along closely lapped, and well back of them £ Larranaga was running third, while Flag o of Pole brought up the rear with Fields saving t ground on the son of American Flag. The leaders, incidentally, top weights in the m field, were raced along with no thought of I the other two, and for an instant it seemed only a matter of which would be first to crack. It was a fast pace, but Larranaga was gradually drawing up on them until at the head of the stretch he was hurrying on I in a fashion that made him seem the win- J ner. I LARRANAGA SWERVES. I Larranaga was first in the straight, but j he only had a head advantage, while Econo- j mic was only a head before Pompeius. Flag j Pole at that time was three lengths back, j but Fields was hanging to his rail position j and had moved up to some extent. In the final furlong Larranaga swerved over slight- j ly and appeared to interfere to some extent •, with both Pompeius and Economic, but both •] were stopping at the time. Then just as the son of Apprehension looked a winner, Flag j Pole made his winning charge. Finding his way through a small opening, the Brookmeade colt rushed through in sen- sational fashion to be the winner by two 1 lengths. Larranaga was four lengths before 1 j the other two. Flag Pole is an eligible for the Belmont Stakes, and while he was in receipt of eight ■ pounds from both Pompeius and Economic in the Swift, they do not enjoy that engagement, " and if the son of American Flag is ! j up to a gallop of a mile and a half, he must : be given consideration for this greatest of : the three-year-old prizes of the meeting. i Mrs. T. W. Durants Sydney, making his 5 ■ first appearance of the season, scored in | , the Weldship Handicap over the short 1 course. It was a close fit, and Rooney, from the Brookmeade Stable, was closely lapped 1 on him, with Mrs. John Hay Whitneys Spar r taking third. Captain Charles was the only other starter, and after being outrun all the 1 way he unseated Christian at the last fence. • It was at the last fence that Rooney lost 1 the race, and he should have won. There * Smoot permitted him to jump in to the ■ discomfort of Span, and it afforded "Pete" Bostwick his opportunity with Sydney. He e kept Mrs. Durants gelding straight and in 1 a driving finish outgamed Rooney to be e winner by a neck in the closing strides. j- Spar was a tired third and, as has been told, Captain Charles lost Christian at the last fence* ACTION IN FRONT. Seventeen plater three-year-olds were e brought together in the opening mile race e "and Action, from the Anall Stable, proved d an easy winner over Andy Schuttingers s Bonnie Prince, with Brandon Rose, from the e Brandon Stable, just saving third from Dexterity. :_ There was a considerable delay at the e post for which Action and Rose Twig were e chiefly responsible. These were taken to a a position outside the stalls and as the barrier rose they had a slight advantage over r the others. It did not avail Rose Twig anything, ■u but Action, with that advantage, had d foot enough to dominate all the running and d be home an easy winner by three lengths. Early in the action, Bonnie Prince found d his way into second place and while he at it no time threatened the winner he always ra held the place safe, having four lengths to o spare crossing the line. Brandon Rose ie steadily worked her way forward in the running v. and was just up in the closing strides ,s to take third from Dexterity by a head. The ie latter had closed a big gap from a slow beginning. e. Joseph E. Wideners The Pelican, whose ;e only previous start saw him winner over r Caterwaul, which subsequently won the ie Keene Memorial, came back to win again n easily from the Greentree Stables Calchas, s, with William Woodwards Bolilee a distant it third before Ipral. This was the third offering, r- a four and a half furlongs dash through h the Widener course that attracted a good ,d band of juveniles. There was little to the race. After breaking IE- well with the son of Haste, Garner, r, when showing the way, steadied him and id had him in hand most of the journey, with h his lead at no time being seriously threatened. t- In the Huntington Purse, Blenheim, from m the Wheatley Stable, again took the measure re of Joseph E. Wideners Pari-Mutuel. In this is Claremont, from the Pegasus Stable, was a a distant third and Gaelic Prince was a bad id last of the four that started. In a previous is meeting Blenheim had beaten Pari-Mutuel, il, with Pari-Mutuel giving him a pound, but in in this meeting the Wheatley colt was giving lg the son of Fair Play eight pounds, which :h made it appear more of a task, but he easily ly proved the winner.
