UPSETS AT LOUISVILLE ♦ Hildur Rocks Victory in Feature Outstanding Surprise. • Defeats Justice Logan and Through Omond in Indian Hill Purse — - Spirited Racing. ♦ LOUISVILLE, Ky., May 18.— Although productive of numerous close finishes and favorably comparing with the most interesting sport during the meeting, surprises occurred at Churchill Downs this afternoon, and when the Harned Brothers Hildur Rock accounted for the Indian Hill Purse, which was fourth on the program, it marked the third upset in successive races. Hildur Rock took into camp Justice Logan, Through Omond and three others, including Pryor, the well-regarded Lee O. Cotner gelding, which was making his first public appearance. Justice Logan was a slight favorite over Pryor, while Hildur Rock ruled at a trifle better than 12 to 1. After following Justice Logan, which set the pace, and Through Omond to the last of the five furlongs, the winner wore them down as he came through next to the rail and, getting up for the lead, tired, but Otis Clelland managed to keep him going well enough to win by a neck. Justice Logan beat Through Omond by a similar margin for second, and the latter was a length and one-half in the van of Pryor at the end. The winner ran the distance on a fast track in 1:01%. CLEAR SKIES. With clear skies and summerlike weather prevailing, the mid-week program attracted a big crowd, which included visitors from Kentucky points. North Mill carried the Nash Bros. Shandon Farm colors to victory in a driving finish with Vennie H. in the opening race, which engaged a limit field of maiden two-year-old colts and geldings at five furlongs. Pass Christian finished third, with Sun Gros leading the others. The winner, a big favorite, showed the way from the termination of the opening quarter, where he drew away from Bianoz and, after wtihstanding an extended threatening bid from Pass Christian, outstayed the sturVi" ocing Vennie H, which stole through along the rail approaching the finish. The winner, an unsexed son of Infinite and Irish Lace, was ridden by W. Garner. Starter Hamilton was called upon to deal with a fractious band from among the poorer grade sprinters in the second race, and some eleven minutes were spent getting them under way for a contest that proved one of the most interesting of the afternoon. K. Russell, ridden by G. Elston, was the winner, with Gunfire second, a head back, and with a like margin over The Whig. Gunfire threatened to draw away into an easy victory after disposing of Manners and, taking a good lead near the final eighth, later weakened, and the winner wore him down in the final strides. Zevar, favorite, failed to make a formidable challenge. ELSTONS SECOND WINNER. Elston rode his second winner when ha drove Cabama, an outsider in the betting, to victory over Sambo Brown, favorite, Pat C, and nine others in the third race. The winner was last in the field of twelve leaving the chute, but worked his way up steadily thereafter, and racing into command a sixteenth out, was not seriously threatened by Sambo Brown, winning by a length at the end of the seven furlongs. After racing into the lead in the stretch, Pat C. tired, and after giving way to the winner, failed to withstand the favorite, which led him for second place by a good length. Running Water and Green Wave tired after showing speed in the early stages. As a result of his winning effort today, K. Russell became ineligible for the second race at Churchill Downs Thursday.
