ADOBE POST TRIUMPHS Derby Preliminary at Homewood Results in Thrilling Race. 4 Nine Starters in Niles Center Purse Finish Lapped on Each Other Daudet Wins Opener. HOMEWOOD. HI., June 13. A number of the less prominent candidates for the twenty-fourth American Derby, to be run Saturday, raced over one mile and seventy yards in the Niles Center Purse, the principal race at .Washington Park today and when the contest resulted -in a thrilling, driving finish, with a majority of the nine starters closely bunched at the finish, qualifiers among the seven eligibles for Saturdays prize that participated, were almost as much in doubt after, as before, the running of the race. Adobe Post, racing for Knebelkamp and Morris, was the winner, with A. Bartelsteins ,Yonkel second, a half length back and with only as much of a margin over W. S. Kilmers Sunmelus. H. P. Headleys Big Beau drove to the wire fourth, with Our Fancy fifth and Prince Hotspur sixth. Evergold, Mad Pursuit and Battering Ram rounded out the starters, of which Evergold and Battering Ram were the only non-eligibles for the American Derby under colors. Although Adobe Post ran the distance in the exceptionally fast time of 1:41, just one-fifth of a second slower than the track record held by Silverdale, his triumph was not clean cut, the adverse racing luck that befell Yonkel and the ability of C. Landolt, who had the mount on the winner, and J. Maiben, who rode Yonkel, to outride William Elliott, Australian, astride Sunmelus when it came to a finish, attaching strings to the victors score. LANDOLTS SKILLFUL BIDE. As the winner, cleverly guided by Lan-dolt, followed the early leaders, Sunmelus and Our Fancy, under snug restraint and forged to the front when called upon, Yonkel was blocked when moving up on the inside in the stretch, and Elliott rode Sunmelus hard, and the latter displayed a willingness to hold on stubbornly despite his early effort. After heading Sunmelus for the lead, Adobe Post drew clear but in the late stages steadily lost ground to the fast finishing Yonkel, as Sunmelus held on gamely and Big Beau also stuck to his task, though racing wide. The race; fashioned as a trial for Derby candidates, topped a better than average program for the day and, with pleasant weather, the opening of the fourth week of the meeting saw a big crowd present. Adobe Post, slight favorite over Mad Pursuit, which was defeated without apparent excuses, was one of several successful choices. The first race resulted in a local victory when Daudet, from F. A. Burtons Everglade stable scored his maiden victory. He defeated Mr. Joe, Hour Zev and nine others from among the maiden juvenile colts and geldings and included among the unplaced vas Pre War, Dixianas much admired son of Man o War, which was making his first start and ruled first choice. The running, at five furlongs distance, saw the winner and Mr. Joe in a furious tussle for the lead the first half-mile, following which Daudet came away slowly until his margin at the close was a length. Hour Zev was five lengths farther back and Glynson was fourth. Racing greenly, Pre War greatly reduced his chances when he bore out badly at the stretch turn, and the Continued on twenty-first page. The second race also resulted in a local victory when Jake Lowensteins Doris Jean proved best among the ten fillies and mares brought together over the three-quarters distance. She won easily with Voltagreen, the favorite, second and Chu Chu third. The latter met with much adverse luck and with better fortune would have been a stronger factor. The winner easily wore down Voltagreen after the latter had prevailed in the lead for five-eighths and, drawing away fast in the final stages, won by four lengths. At the finish Voltagreen was four lengths before Chu Chu and Jessie Carey fourth. Esseff, brilliant home-bred daughter of High Time and La Belle Helene, in Charles T. Fishers Dixiana Stable, scored her second victory in as many starts and equalled the best, time of the meeting, :59, for five-eighths, as she easily defeated Levaal, Poly-phote and others from among the better grade juveniles in the Hose Hill Purse, third on the card. The fleet winner sprinted past Levaal and Polyphote and was in command before reaching the final quarter and, though lightly restrained in the fianl sixteenth, won by three lengths. Headed by Polyphote for second place near the final eighth, Levaal proved a bit too game for her in the late stages and beat her in the final strides for second, while Le Bruyere, stable companion of Levaal, fourth, and High Complexion, which also had up the Dixiana colors, next in the field of twelve. Under a good ride by apprentice W. Wright, Ed Haughtons Sandwrack was winner over Unencumbered, Zevar and nine other plater three-year-olds over one mile in the fourth race. After saving much ground with the winner, rating him back of the pace for the first three-quarters, Wright brought him up on the outside of Zevar and Unencumbered in the last eighth and, standing a hard drive gamely, the Haughton gelding got up to win by a head from Unencumbered. Tiring after showing the most speed for slightly more than seven-eighths, Zevar was a length and one-half back of Unencumbered at the end. Fourth went to Play-around. The winner prevailed at long odds, most support going to Unencumbered. 1
