DEAD HEAT AT HAWTHORNE The payoff of a dead heat where pari-mutuel betting prevails, as was the case Monday at Hawthorne, when Tommy Tickle and Battle Ax deadheated in the eighth race, is the same as employed in paying off the mutuel place bets made in every race. The total moneys straight and place are added together, and the tracks percentage is deducted. Then the sum remaining is divided by two, and the number of tickets sold on each horse, in this case Tommy Tickle and Battle Ax, are divided as set forth in the American Racing Manual, pages 440 and 441. The correct payoff prices on Tommy Tickle and Battle Ax are shown in the Hawthorne chart elsewhere in this edition pf Daily Racing Form,
