; SANTA CREST SCORES EASILY Leads Canadian -Breds by a Wide Margin at Devonshire. Sphere, of Beauty Finishes Second and Sea Kale, Favorite, Is Third Helen Green a Surprise. WINDSOR, Ont, Aug. 29 The Erindale Stables Santa Crest scored a runaway victory in the Canadia-bred event this afternoon, that had its running over the three-quarters distance. Sphere of Beauty, racing in the interest-of W. G. Campbell, drove into second place, beaten five lengths for top-honors. Sea Kale, coupled with Fair Fortune as the J. E. Smallman entry and a stoutly supported choice, barely got up in. time to take third over Raysol. Santa Crest, piloted by apprentice I Humphries, went to the front at the barriers rise, opened up a long lead and dominated the running throughout. At one stage of the journey the Erindale Stable3 three-year-old had an advantage of eight lengths. For the first half mile Freethinker and Fair Fortune attended the winner closest, but they tired of their pace and dropped back badly. Sphere of Beauty then moved into second position, the place she held to the end. Sea Kale lacked speed early and it took the utmost endeavors of jockey Frank Dougherty to get him up in time to take the minor award. Todays was the first muddy track of the. Windsor season and, as a result, upsets were numerous. The changed track conditions brought the blue pencil into play and there were a considerable number of withdrawals in several of the events. After the heavy rains of the forenoon the clouds cleared away and it turned out to be a sizzling hot afternoon. A claiming event, styled the Delbridge Purse, at nine furlongs, was won by Alys-sum, a daughter of Supremus and Escarpo-lette, after being eased up six lengths to the good of Coral Beach. The latter established the pace and easily saved the place by four lengths over Duchess of York. Coral Beach took up the pacemaking burden and enjoyed a lead of a couple of lengths in the run down the back strOCch, while Alyssum was under reserve and did not move up until the last half mile. Gunman was forwardly placed, but dropped back as the field swung around the far turn. Coral Beach led until straightened out in the stretch, where the Supremus iilly went to the front and drew out with every stride during the last eighth. Coral Beach, while no match for the winner, held on well and Duchess of York turned in an even performance to gain her part of the award. Homelike lost considerable ground around the first turn and failed to show any semblance of speed throughout the entire journey. Dark War, carrying the light and dark blue hoops of the H. C. Hatch stable, showed a decided liking for the muddy going and chalked up her third consecutive victory in the opening five furlongs dash. K. C. Barrs Grimace raced to the place and the show-position went to Fair Billy, grouped in the field and racing for H. G. Bedwell. . The daughter of Traumer and Sun Thor had the speed of the party and led throughout the running. Jockey G. Riley had a : snug hold of the Hatch colorbearer throughout ! and in the closing sixteenth was looking back at the frantic efforts of Bernius, on Grimace. The latter made up ground under pressure, but was unable to threaten the winner, though only a half-length back at the finish. Riley could have won off with. Dark War had he so desired. Fair Billy found clear sailing on the inside and wore down Parade Rest in the closing strides. An ordinary lot of maidens went to the post in the six furlongs second race. S. White supplied the winner in Chanson Belle, which defeated Black Signal, from the Pasadena Stable, and the Thorncliffe Stables Serfman was third, in advance of Troubanova. Chanson Belle lost little time in racing into command, dominated the running throughout and, after resisting several bids from Black Signal and Serfman, drew out again in the closing furlong. Black Signal-was in front from the outset but came wide into the stretch and was unable to make up any ground under pressure in the closing test. Serfman loomed up in threatening fashion, straightening for the run to the finish, but was in the worst going next to the inner rail and weakened at the end. Long shot players came into their own when Helen Green furnished an upset by capturing the third, another three-quarter mile dash. Under the guidance of Tracey Vercher, Helen Green went into the lead in the first few. strides and opened up an advantage of five lengths at one stage of the journey. Vercher had only to sit still through the stretch and had his mount safely over the line winner by better than two lengths. Zangwill, after racing far back early, came with a belated rush in the last quarter mile and raced into second place before the furlong pole was reached, but was never able to endanger the winner. Lace Shawl, which had been in the first flight throughout the entire running, barely held on long enough to save the show from In-arage. Liberty Ace, the favorite, was never prominent and apparently did not favor the going.
