SET HAST1PAST BACK Stewards Hold J. E. Wideners Filfy Responsible for Bumping. 1 Kentucky Stakes at Saratoga Is. Won by Coburns Eva B. Swatter Takes Claiming Handicap. SARATOGA SPRINGS, N. Y., Aug. 29. There was another disqualification by the N Saratoga Association stewards this after- noon when Joseph E. Wideners Hastipast, after finishing third to J. A. Coburns Eva B. and John J. Robinsons Manya, in the running of the Kentucky Stakes, was set back for fouling and Teaberry, from the Greentree Stable, was moved into that position. The Kentucky is .a claiming prize for juvenile fillies and carried a net value of ,050 to the winner. There was some bumping in the stretch between Hastipast and Eva B., but they seemed equally to blame and then after Eva B. had beaten the Widener filly and Manya had raced into second piace, the decision caused some surprise. Manya did not appear to suffer from the crowding. After the deluge of late Saturday afternoon the track was heavy, but the weather was bright and a crowd of goodly proportions was out for the sport. In the Kentucky, Boy Crazy was first to show from the stalls, but Tinema was soon showing the way to Cutie Face and Hastipast, racing on the outside, moved into third place. Boy Crazy was following the Widener filly and then came Manya. Going to the stretch turn Hastipast and Cutie Face closed on Tinema and at the same time Eva B., which was slow to be under way, was making up ground rapidly. On the stretch turn Eva B. was circling around on the outside when Garner went out a bit with Hastipast and the pair bumped, both losing some ground. In the meantime Pascuma was making an attempt to come through and he may have suffered some interference to his mount when they were straightened out for the run home, but he was choosing a course that invited just such interference. Eva B. came away in the final sixteenth to be winner by a length, while Manya had beaten Hastipast a like distance for the place. Then came the disqualification that upset this order of finish and awarded third to Teaberry, which was at the heels of the Widener filly. EXCELLENT PERFORMANCE. W. L. Branns useful plater, Swatter, ran an excellent race to score in the mile and a furlong of the Pittsf ield Claiming Handicap when he showed the way to H. J. Vallofts Action, with M. W. Bucks Tug o War, from the same stable, taking the place from L. Strubes Don Pedro, which was badly messed about in the running. From a good start, Raccoon and Action went out to show the way and, closely lapped, they opened up a lead of three lengths on the others in the first quarter. Tug o War was racing after them and Swatter galloped along outside the son of Man o War and under a nice steadying restraint. Mills had permitted Don Pedro to drop back and then he made the mistake of attempting to go through on the inside, only to be blocked and he was unable to find clear racing room on the outside until it was too late. Raccoon hung right to Action to the head of the stretch, where he weakened, and as he did Sanford moved around with Swatter to challenge Action. It was not much of a fight when Swatter came alongside and he was soon by to be over the line the winner by a length. Action was doing his best to save the place, but he was a length and a half before Tug o War, which barely lasted to take third from Don Pedro, when the son of Spanish Prince II. came with his belated rush. Raccoon stopped badly, while Spinach, the only other starter, was outrun all the way. GOLDEN WORDS BEST. Golden Words proved best of the big field of cheap maiden juveniles that were brought together in the opening five and a half furlongs dash. He led home Careful Kitty and third was the portion of Terrykin. Terrykin, showing a great flash of speed, was the one to dash into a long early lead and Careful Kitty and Golden Words were soon heading the others, though at a stage of the running Mrs. Andersons filly was in close quarters on the inner rail. Terrykin held to his lead to the stretch and there as Mills made his move with Continued on twenty-first page.l SET HASTIPAST BACK Continued from first page. Golden Words, West, on Careful Kitty, carried him out badly. This cost ground, but in the final eighth. Golden. Words disposed of the filly to win going away by a length and Careful Kitty had run down Terrykin to save second place by a like distance. Lei raced fourth and the others were in strung out order. James Simpson, Jr.s Irish Bullet proved best of the maiden steeplechasers that met in a test over the short course and. "te won with plenty to spare ever Mrs. F. Ambrose Clarks Hamptonian, ridden by the amateur; "Pete" Bostwick. The Greentree Stables Cherry Brandy was third, many lengths before Gwladys Whitneys Rideaway, which was making his first effort through the field under racing colors. There were two f-lls in the running. Porcelain went down at the front field Liverpool with E. Ball, and F. A. Smiths Melita fell at the back field Liverpool, with W. Collins. Both rider escaped serious injury. , Irish Bullet dashed away into a long lead at the drop of the flag and was never headed. At the water, the second turn of the course, he made a bad landing, but recovered quickly and was not afterwards threatened. Catalonian showed a bit of. speed for a turn of the course and Melita was racing forwardly until he came down, while Cherry Brandy and Hamptonian galloped along togethe- and under restraint. Cherry Brandy bobbled rather badly at some of his fences and, coming to the last one, Mr. Bostwick rushed Hamptonian along so successfully that he "beat the son of- Star Hampton over the line by a couple of lengths, but he was eight lengths back of Irish Bullet himself. Back of the first three at the finish the others were so far out of it that they were not needlessly urged. Rideaway, in fourth place, vas thirty lengths back and he was well before Rockdale, which ran a dull race. Como, the imported fencer, after trailing far out of it all the way, outfinished Catalonian because the latter was being pulled up after taking the last fence. There was a stirring finish to the three-quarters for platers, that was the fifth race, when Damon Runyons Contribute, under a powerful ride by Robertson, earned a vicr tory over Mrs. A. Carfanos General A., and well back of the pair My Purchase beat Haggerson for third. Haggerson forced the early pace, but Robertson was not far away with Contribute and Lullaby II. was also in the van, showing the way to My Purchase. General A. was farther back, but by the time the stretch was reached he had worked his way to the contention and in the final eighth he and Contribute shook the others off. General A. ; had come through on the inside and as he fought his way up on Contribute, Robertson was forced to a hard drive. The Runyon gelding answered the call gamely and he was still a neck to the good at the line. General A. had beaten My Purchase two lengths and the tired Haggerson was another length away. -
