CHARACTER AGAIN TRIUMPHS Leads Miney Myerson in Beechnut Claiming Handicap at Empire. Vested Power Is Easy Winner Over Catino, Long Shot, in Third Race Zorana Scores for Newtondale Stable. YONKERS, N. Y., Oct.. 25. The Beechnut Claiming Handicap was the best offering of the program at Empire City this afternoon, and the B. B. Stables Character, ridden by Bellizzi, proved a good winner over J. H. Louchheims Miney Myerson, while G. M. Odoms Rally Round was third. Six started in here, with the winner the most favored one. , The start eliminated Little Lad when he propped and broke flatfooted and was then hopelessly outrun. Miney Myerson was hustled into command at once, with Character in nearest pursuit and Orphean and Rally Round racing lapped on each other, leading Fly On. Horn allowed Miney Myerson to draw away into a brief lead and then placed him under restraint. Character was kept forwardly and at the far turn Long called upon Rally Round in an attempt to have him improve his position. The colt responded slowly under urging and, turning for home, began to bear out slightly. When well straightened out in the stretch Character readily wore down Miney Myerson, and at the end had a safe advantage. Miney Myerson had no trouble in saving the place from Rally Round, which in turn was doing his best to stave off the determined opposition offered by Orphean at the end. Another cold and cloudy day prevailed, and as a result the attendance suffered considerably. The track was fast, and the majority of the winners had commanding advantages over their respective opposition at the finish. Zorana was a driving winner of the first race. Ridden by George Rose, Zorana came through on the inside turning for home, but in the final furlong was doing her best to stand off the rush of Grannys Trade, while Peacock Girl was third. The start was a good one and Dome, Zorana, Broad Lights and Golden Fate were racing along together. Turning for home Flying Sailor moved up on the outside, while Rose came through on the inside with Zorana. At the same time Merry Caroline, in forcing her way through, bothered Broad Lights. The latter was showing signs of distress at the time from early efforts trying to race Dome into defeat. Through the final furlong Zorana held on gamely and held the fast closing Grannys Trade safe, while Peacock Girl on the outside of the field finished going fastest of all. Irenes Bob outlasted a band of platers in the second race. Wayden raced to the place, while Americana was third. The start was a good one and Long made every use of the high early speed of Irenes Bob. Rounding the far turn he had drawn away into a long lead, but through the final furlong was tiring fast and just lasted to have a length lead over Wayden. The latter was one that raced forwardly from the start, but Americana was slow to settle in his stride, but through the stretch run finished going fastest of all. Vested Power dominated the running of the third race all the way, and at the finish had a ten-length lead over Catino, while in third place was Step Pretty, Knessi sent Vested Power into command at the start and quickly drew away from the others. When settled on the back stretch he was taken under restraint, leading Catino and Careful Kitty. Swinging for home Knessi saved much ground and steadily increased his advantage to the end. Catino, after dropping back rounding the far turn, came again and finished steadily, while Step Pretty was guided to the outside and was a good third.
