ORAL BETTING MAY PREVAIL Judge Joseph A. Murphy Almost Determined to Try Method at the Fair Grounds. LATONIA, Ky., Oct. 31 According to reports brought West from New York by visitors for the Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes, which was renewed here Saturday, Joseph A. Murphy, general manager of the Crescent City Jockey Club, which has taken over the Fair Grounds, New Orleans, has about made up his mind that oral betting should be a part of the meeting opening at that track next January 23. Several visitors stated that practically all of the larger New York oralizers, or commissioners, have assurances that they will be invited to operate in the Fair Grounds club house. General manager Murphy has no intention of doing away with the certificate form of betting, which has proven so popular with Fair Grounds and Jefferson Park patrons, and this mode of speculation will be exclusive in the general, or main betting ring. The Fair Grounds club house is to be popularly priced and will be open to the public at a very nominal charge over the general admission. Following the close of Tanforan, Murphy will go to New Orleans and personally direct preparations for the Fair Grounds meeting, which will embrace from forty-two to forty-eight days. John C. Schank, president of the Crescent City Jockey Club, is leaving his home in Chicago about December 1 for New Orleans, where he will spend the entire winter. 4
