SIX EASTERN DERBY CANDIDATES REACH LOUISVILLE ♦ « All Stand Journey Without Mishap and Appear in Fine Condition • Ladysman, Winter Book Favorite, Due Today — Warm Stable Still Endeavoring to Purchase the Crack Western Colt, Head Play » LOUISVILLE, Ky., May 2. — Showing no bad effects from their westward trip, the six Kentucky Derby candidates that reached Churchill Downs from Maryland Monday afternoon, were under saddle and on the muddy Downs racing strip for limbering gallops this morning. Horsemen were most impressed by Mr. Khayyam, the Catawaba Farms Chesapeake Stakes winner, and Sarada, which will carry F. A. Griffiths colors in Saturdays race. Good Advice, also owned by the Catawaba Farm; Brookmeade Stables Inlander; Lee Rosenbergs Kerry Patch and John E. Hughes Silent Shot, others comprising the vanguard of invaders, also looked good in their introductory gallops. Col. E. R. Bradleys Brokers Tip and L. M. Seversons Spicson drew the only work assignments, the former going a half-mile in :51%, handily and the latter a similar distance in :54 under a strong pull. Joe Notter, F. Garrett and W. Mulholland, respective trainers of Kerry Patch, Silent Shot and Sarada, personally looked after their candidates. Matt Brady, who is in charge of Mr. Khayyam and Good Advice, is arriving tomorrow and Bob Smith, trainer of Inlander, may not get here to saddle Inlander. Smith was painfully injured in an automobile mishap Sunday and while hia injuries are not serious, he may be unable to make the trip. With but one exception — Good Advice — the half dozen easterners will conclude their Derby preparation in private. Good Advice is scheduled to participate in a seven-eighths race Thursday and his showing in that will have much to do with . his Derby status. Trainer Garrett indicated that Silent Shot, a superior mudder, may not accept for the classic if the track is fast. Up to this time, trainer Mulholland and owner Griffith have not decided upon a rider for Sarada. With the arrival tomorrow of W. R. Coes Ladysman, winter book favorite, Pomponius, second in the Chesapeake and the Audley Farms Trace Call, all of the candidates will be on the grounds. This flashy trio left Maryland today and will reach the Downs by noon Wednesday. While negotiations were not formally reopened, T. P. Hayes, acting for Silas Mason and Arnold Hanger, persists in endeavoring to induce Mrs. William Crump to reconsider Mason and Hangers offer for Head Play. About two weeks ago, the owners of the Warm Stable offered Mrs. Crump, 0,000 and fifty percent of the Derby Purse, if he should triumph, for the son of My Play. It was understood that the offer, flatly refused by Mrs. Crump, has not been withdrawn. The result of the Preparation Purse, run Continued from twenty-first page. Head Play, Brokers Tip and Charley O., the latter owned by the R. M. Eastman estate, and winner of the Florida Derby, continue the leading western threats. Spic-son and Strideaway are very probable starters, and L. Jones and Sons Fair Rochester, slightly injured in the Clark Handicap Saturday, is coming around rapidly and if his final trial Thursday is satisfactory, will be in the Derby parade. Jockey Ray Workman, engaged to ride Ladysman, is expected Friday and M. Garner, who will pilot Inlander, is expected at the same time. Jockeys P. Walls and H. Richards, riders for Mr. Khayyam and Good Advice, are not expected before Saturday morning. L. Schaefer, tentatively engaged for Kerry Patch, and B. Hanford, who is sought for Trace Call, also will be late arrivals. Either J. Bejshak or C. Kurtsinger will ride Pomponius.
