CALUMET FARM VICTORY » Hug Again Just Lasts to Win at Churchill Downs. • King Cicero Finishes in Whirlwind Fashion and Just Misses — Abe Furst Scores. LOUISVILLE, Ky., May 15.— The devil-red and blue colors of Warren Wrights Calumet Farm, were carried to a popular and narrowly gained victory in the Mountain Laurel Purse, one of three attractive races on todays program here. This was for juveniles which had not won two races since the opening of the Kentucky season. Hug Again, trim daughter of Stimulus and Affection, was the successful Calumet standard bearer. King Cicero, maiden son of Swinburne, racing for William E. Smith, gave backers of the winner, which went to the post at less than three to five, a real scare and while beaten a half length, some in the crowd were of the opinion that a better judged ride on the part of W. Kern, who rode the Smith gelding, might have reversed the finish. They reached the close of the five furlongs far in the van of the five others, of which Cactus Rose, from Mrs. George B. Coxs Parkview Stable was third, a head before Booms Pal. From a fast beginning, the winner moved along as If she would have no trouble making good for her many backers. In the final eighth, however, and after she had increased her advantage to four lengths entering the stretch, she tired and the more courageous King Cicero made up ground rapidly as the finish neared. During the last fifty yards, C. McCrossen who rode the winner, drove her to the utmost and his strong finish was a big factor in her success. For a short distance in the stretch, Kern appeared to have difficulty bringing King Cicero from behind the winner but after coming out in the last sixteenth, he finished in whirlwind Continued on twenty-second page. After reaching the stretch in second place, Cactus Rose tired, yet ater giving way to King Cicero, was good enough to outstay Booms Pal. The track was heavy and holding and the winners time of 1:04 marked a creditable performance. Rainy weather held down the attendance. Eleven maiden two-year-old fillies comprised the field for the opening race at five furlongs and it resulted in a mild surprise when Gertie, a daughter of Ladkin and Mountain Lass, racing for W. E. Hupp, and coupled in the mutuel field with Miss Gohi, was returned the winner. She out-gamed Margaret Foley, the favorite, in a long, hard drive and at the end was just a neck before the Jack Howard filly. Third, a length and one-half away from Margaret Foley, was Roulade, which made up a great amount of ground with a whirlwind charge over the closing two furlongs. Uncle Matt, veteran King Gorin gelding, was seen in his first winning effort of the year when he won from Broomshot, Noahs Pride and eight others at his favorite distance of three-quarters in the second race. The winner and Noahs Pride divided favoritism. The six-year-old winner took command soon after the start and after C. E. Allen had rated him cleverly for half a mile, he came on stoutly, easily withstanding a challenge from Broomshot in the stretch, where Noahs Pride, which occupied third place throughout, failed to threaten, yet held his position safe over Representative. The inconsistent Abe Furst signaled his first appearance under the silks of the Piute Stable with a victory when he nosed out Volwood in the third race, which was delayed some nine minutes by the freakish antics of the ever troublesome Delivered. He acted his worst during the time lost at the post, but when the start came was away fast from a position outside the stalls. Eleven participated and Kuvera accounted for the minor portion of the purse. He was beaten six lengths by the leaders and outstayed Cresta Run, which was second choice to Volwood, by two lengths.
