TIES THISTLE DOWN RECORD Lady Menifee Runs Three-Quarters in 1:11- on Ohio Track. Manners, Undefeated in Recent Starts, Finishes Second and Burgo Third Hanka Bides Two Winners. CLEVELAND, Ohio, Aug. 5. Manners, which had finished first in all five starts this year though disqualified once, met defeat today in the Lake Shore Purse, three-quarters of a mile, which featured a good program at Thistle Down. The J. H. Downing gelding finished second to Lady Menifee, which was making her first start on this track. The Menifee mare went in her best form, finishing the distance in 1:11, which equaled the track record. She won easily, while Manners, always well up, was forced to a drive to beat out Burgoo. Back of them were some of the best sprinters on the track, including Modesto, Quorum and Soupcon. The winner, ridden by J. Cowley, was well played, but Quorum went to the post favorite. Modesto led to the stretch head, where Manners took command. Lady Menifee then moved up with a brilliant rush in the final furlong on the outside and swept on to win most decisively. Manners was a handy second. In the final test Burgoo outstayed the tiring Modesto by a narrow margin for the minor award. Apprentice jockey W. Hanka made it a double when he brought Dark Star from the rear with a rush through the stretch to win the fourth race with much to spare. Ideal conditions prevailed, and the half-holiday crowd swelled the attendance much above any previous day of the week. The racing was most interesting. The promising apprentice, W. Hanka, piloted th3 third winner of his brief riding career when he guided. Social Climber to victory in the second race. Toltec showed the way until midway in the stretch, where Social Climber moved up on the inside and Le Flore challenged. In the final drive Social Climber earned the verdict by a neck and Le Flore nosed out Toltec in the final stride for second place. Run On was a factor throughout and finished lapped on the leaders. A. Inclans Canonazo made a runaway affair of the initial dash. He drew away into an easy lead in the early stages and increased his advantage in the stretch, to eventually win eased up. Secret Call raced in second position until well into the stretch, with White Top never far away. In the final test White Top outlasted the Christian colorbearer for the second award. Taking command at once, The Dipper never left the issue in serious doubt in the third race. Andromeda proved to be best of the others and Brown Gold quit. The Southerner barely saved third from the resolutely finishing Giggle Box. Dark Star, which won at long odds the first time out at Thistle Down, gave an even better performance in todays fourth, when she came through with another victory over the same distance of a mile and forty yards. lThe Transmute filly improved her position gradually on the outside of the field and in the stretch closed fast and was drawing away from her opponents as the end was reached. Aurica had the early speed of the group and looked like the winner until Dark Star came up to her. She was good enough to withstand the challenge of Thor-ese Girl, which finished third, ahead of Pennant Bearer and Flying Giblon. . The latter finished well. Taking command at once, Gurgler was never headed in the fifth event, although . he earned the verdict by only a head. The King raced closely lapped on the pacemaker for most of the trip and held on courageously in the final test. Pompeia raced into third place when Falmouth Belle quit.
