INDIAN RUNNER ARLINGTON INAUGURAL WINNER REPEATS 1933 EFFORT Mondays Victory More Impressive Than Last Years Triumph Mammoth Northwest Side Track Opens Meeting Under Adverse J Weather Conditions ARLINGTON HEIGHTS 111 June 23 One of the surprise handicap stars of the last Chicago season D A Woods gelded fiveyearold Indian Runner began his 1934 stake campaign auspiciously here this after ¬ noon when he raced gamely in the sloppy going on the outside in the stretch to win the fifth running of the 2500 added Arling ¬ ton Inaugural Handicap by half a length The race was run over threequarters threequartersIndian Indian Runner won the stake in 1933 but because he carried top weight of 118 pounds today in this first fixture of the thirty days Arlington meeting his victory was more im ¬ pressive than a year ago It added 3575 to his winnings He showed so much im ¬ provement over his only previous start this season it indicated he will be a factor to be reckoned with in the stakes for which he is eligible in the West WestClosest Closest to Indian Runner was the Ever ¬ glade Stables threeyearold Dartle coupled in the mutuel field which fought it out gamely with the winner after having gone to the inside in the early stretch and gave way only in the final yards Some Pomp the threeyearold filly from the Calumet Farm Stable that set the early pace held on well enough to be third a length and a half behind Dartie and a half length be ¬ fore the fourth place Anarchy BUN IN DRIVING BAIN Indian Runner got away with the leaders in the driving rain that descended upon the opening day crowd of 7500 but Some Pomp raced to the front on the inside and con ¬ tinued to set the pace around the first turn under pressure from Miss Patience Dartle was the first to emerge from the bunched field to challenge the leader The Everglade colt began to move up on the outside going into the stretch turn and although losing some ground passed Some Pomp and went to the inside in the stretch Indian Runner was outside of Dartle and was put to a hard drive to overtake Dartle and take the lead in the final furlong The winner bore in slightly in standing off Dartles late chal ¬ lenge but did not interfere Anarchy last in the early stages came strongest of all on the inside insideAdvising Advising Anna favored at 2 to 1 was never prominent and finished far back The winner was second choice in the betting Indian Runner ran the six furlongs in 113 behind a pace which saw the leaders at the quarter in 23 and the half in 47 47The The Brookmeade Stable supplied the win ¬ ner of the sixth race which brought out five good milers in Good Goods a threeyearold half brother to Toro Ridden by Don Meade and marking a triple for that lad Good Goods moved up fast near the far turn and assuming a clear lead easily held sway to the finish where his margin over Dogmata was two and a half lengths Late Date was a tiring third after racing Clarify into de ¬ feat while setting the pace paceSUITED SUITED BY WET GOING GOINGSuited Suited by the sloppy going Watersplash a bay daughter of Pot au Feu which races for E D Shaffer proved best by threex lengths of the seven maiden twoyearold fillies that met over the five furlongs of the first race Breaking well but in early difficulty she worked her way up steadily through the field challenged the early leader Mrs John Hertz Royal Duchess in the early stretch run and then drew away to win with some ¬ thing in reserve reserveRoyal Royal Duchess made the early pace with ¬ out urging but was not equal to the chal ¬ lenge of the winner She was easily best of the others holding a fivelength margin over the Brookmeade Stables Light Brocade at the finish Watersplash ran the distance in 101 101Trainer Trainer Alex Gordon sent George Ogle saddled the winner in Some Knight the gelded son of Bright Knight coming on the outside from behind a fast early pace to win by a half length after jockey Al Tipton had him under a hard drive from the early stretch The Jones George veteran Broad Meadows had a half length advantage over the Audley Farms Cloud DOr for second A G Tarns Blue Day the first favorite of the day to fall was no factor early but closed fairly well to be three lengths back for fourth fourthCloud Cloud DOr and Broad Meadows sprinted away from their rivals at the start and raced head and head to the stretch
