CAPITALIST IN FRONT Scores His Second Straight Victory in Mondays Best Race at Detroit Mild Surprises Mark Majority of the theRaces Races Jockey G Woolf Rides RidesThree Three of Days Winners DETROIT Mich June 25 The improv ¬ ing Capitalist which races for J Freeman won his second straight victory of the meet ¬ ing by accounting for the fourth race which engaged the best field of the sevenrace program offered at the Fair Grounds this afternoon Charles T Fishers Genteel Lady was second slightly more than a length back of the winner and a half length before H C Rumages The Point PointFor For the first time during the meeting the program consisted entirely of claiming races but despite its unattractiveness a record Monday crowd was on hand Although tor ¬ rid weather prevailed downtown there was a refreshing breeze at the track After the running of the fourth race drooping clouds gave out a strong threat of rain The platers provided interesting sport and close finishes were in order in a majority of the races racesMild Mild surprises marked several of the events six of which were all over distances less than a mile but when Capitalist led his eight other opponents to the finish of the fourth he provided the biggest upset De ¬ spite his previous victory the son of John P Grier was overlooked in the wagering and paid 37 for each 2 ticket ticketBeginning Beginning slowly Capitalist was sent out ¬ side his opponents to wrest the lead from Crackle but once in command he drew away into a long lead Entering the stretch however Genteel Lady was carried a trifle wide and she was not straightened out until the final furlong From there on she cut down the winners margin and The Point which also lost ground was making his challenge Unable to reach the flying leader which ran the distance in 112 Genteel Lady and The Point hejd the others safe safeAnother Another mild surprise and close finish came with the running of the fifth race when Incandescent got up to beat the well backed Come Seven Third went to Sequoia which headed Divert at the end of the three quarters quartersSEQUOIA SEQUOIA STUMBLES STUMBLESWhile While Come Seven was rushed into the lead soon after the start and held a clear advantage to the stretch Incandescent was always the best of the others After reach ¬ ing the final sixteenth Incandescent gradu ¬ ally wore down Come Seven to beat the latter by a neck But for stumbling in the run to the far turn Sequoia probably would have made the contest more interesting Scythe had speed to the stretch The Detroitowned Bomar Stable of Charles Bohn and P A Markey furnished its first winner of the year when Billy Bee was best of eight other maiden juveniles in the first race Carmanchita was second with La Cherie third While the stanchly backed Julia Grant and Dancing Spirit showed the most early speed the winning son of Jean Valjean and Under the Rose was next to last in motion but lucky to save ground after a furlong and George Woolf drove him into command after reach ¬ ing the stretch Although Billy Bee estab ¬ lished a clear lead after reaching the final furlong Woolf had him under pressure to the end endJoe Joe Jacobs rode his first winner since re ¬ turning to the saddle when he drove the Greentree Stables Scrambled Eggs to vic ¬ tory over Herendeth Imperial Bunty and eight other juveniles that contested the five furlongs second race Although Herendeth was first under way Jacobs lost little time in sending Scrambled Eggs into command and after establishing a length and onehalf advantage before reaching the stretch he held his margin to the end While Heren ¬ deth and Imperial Bunty were always the best of the others Red Rod second choice to the winner began in a tangle and was only beaten a nose for third thirdClyde Clyde Van Dusen saddled another winner for Charles T Fishers Dixiana stable when Full Tilt beat Hammel by a nose in the third race Third place went to Scotch Pepper PepperGeorge George Woolf who had previously scored Continued on twentyninth page CAPITALIST IN FRONT Continued from first page with Billy Bee had the winner in command soon after the start and although Hammel came through on the inside to reach the lead near the final furlong of the six fur ¬ longs Full Tilt came again to gain his small margin of success While Fretful forced the early pace at a loss of ground the favored Scotch Pepper came to the inside for the drive and the finish found him threequar ¬ ters of a length back of Hammel and three lengths before the tiring Fretful Only six started with Merely and Volo completing the field The latter bled after reaching the stretch stretchGorge Gorge Woolf rode his third winner when he brought Tom Donleys Traitor to the fin ¬ ish of the sixth race a popular and easy win ¬ ner Second went to the lightly regarded Bright Day with Morsel third thirdFollowing Following the pace of Chief Daunt and Higher for threeeighths the winner forged to the front when called upon and had more than a threelength margin at the end While Bright Day was forced to come from far back in earning her award Higher was eased up when he went lame in the stretch
