WHITHARRAL IN CLOSE FINISH Beats Gulfelano by a Nose in Most Pretentious Race at Fairmount Wind Storm Visits Collinsvllle Track and Breaks Heat Wave Responsible for Con ¬ siderable Reduction in Attendance COLLINSVILLE 111 June 25 The Onon dago Purse a claiming contest which served as the fifth race drew the post of favoritism at Fairmount Park Monday when racing secretary R A Leigh failed to fill an al ¬ lowance affair The Onondaga was a sprint over the six furlongs route and had but seven starters Five others named Saturday for the event were scratched this morning and with George Maypole Mayreen Grand Champion Preferred and Run On out of the contest it took some of the color away from the sprint However the race proved a popular one which brought together such local favorites as Gulfelano Annarita Staked Plains Whitharral Jane Packard Lady Federal and Just High The race re ¬ sulted in a sensational finish with Whithar ¬ ral beating Gulfelano by a nose and Just High third after setting the pace until the final eighth eighthThe The weather continued hot and it seemed to hurt the attendance as there was a noticeable decrease from the crowds of last week weekShortly Shortly before the running of the fourth race a wind storm visited the course and it broke the heat wave temporarily Rain threatened but it held off and the feature was run over a fast track trackMinnequa Minnequa coupled in the field won a lucky race in the opener when she defeated Kyso the favorite Clothtop and nine other threeyearolds at six furlongs furlongsW W Boganowski had the mount on the win ¬ ner and savel all ground possible on the F Sowell filly The winner was off with the leaders and after racing Mamie D into de ¬ feat opened a good lead under a welljudged rfde and entering the stretch appeared beaten but Boganowski managed to outride W Root whose performance was mediocre With a much stronger ride near the finish Kyso would probably have won with ease easeAnother Another twelvehorse field met in the sec ¬ ond race which was for maiden twoyear olds at four and onehalf furlongs and the winner turned up in H C La Munyons re ¬ cently acquired Earth Shaker with Darkie second and Blow Away third thirdThe The winner racing on the inside followed Linchpin and Up Yonder closely for the first quarter and when Up Yonder took Linchpin to the outside fence entering the stretch opened up a threelength lead Tracy Reno who rode the winner was sitting still as they finished with Darkie tiring fast but able to hold a length advantage over the fastmoving Blow Away for second place placeThe The third straight field to embrace twelve starters met in the third race at six fur ¬ longs and E K Brysons Red Vest earned victory when he was able to get up in the last few strides to gain a half length verdict over Kite with Merilee Z coming from far back to take third thirdThe The winner was nicely rated by apprentice D Edwards He allowed Kite Equation and Gold Rose to set the pace for half a mile and coming to tHe outside of the leaders entering the stretch wore down Gold Rose then passed Equation when he quit and was under severe pressure in the final sixteenth to overhaul Kite The latter had early speed and held on gamely when challenged by the winner in the final stages stagesApprentice Apprentice D Edwards rode his second winner of the day when he put up a splendid ride to get Allen Sanduskys fouryearold Black Flash home in a gruelling stretch bat ¬ tle with Probationer Sis Largo finished third thirdEdwards Edwards took his time with the daughter of Coventry racing far out of it until turn ¬ ing into the stretch Black Flash came very wide in the stretch and passing the tiring leaders had to shake off the determined challenge made by Probationer from the eighth post to the finish Sis Largo tired in the drive after showing the way for nearly
